It’s not about what I think, it’s about the positions they were given. Pharrell was named a creative director due to his brand impact/ideas while Virgil was an artistic director due to having hands on design experience.

Like you said, they gave Pharrell the position because of his influence. If they were worried about artistic design/direction, they would have gone with someone more qualified, like Martine Rose.
