Pharrell got the job out of a sheer publicity stunt, there's nothing close on his resume that would let you think that he was more fit for the job than for example say ye or even a whole bunch of other designers like Colm Dillane who was already killing it with LV before Pharell showed up

At least Kanye actually put the work in just like his peer, Virgil. They actually interned at big brands and did their own fashion shows for their respective brands. Pharrell has never even done a fashion show before. Bro is hella unqualified for the position but it’s clear he was just chosen for his hype in streetwear. He was the next best choice in that regard after Kanye and they were definitely not risking things with Kanye
