    damn apparently they actually were/are very big in italy, just found this article

    chartmasters.org/2017/06/cspc-pink-floyd-popularity-analysis/21

    "If all those numbers are outstanding, nothing comes close to the band’s legacy in Italy. Since 2000, although only one album was released, they amassed the unreal total of 1590 weeks on the charts."

    lol idk about that. i like it, but when the drums kick in i feel like its not quite as potent as it should be. the bass is cool in the beginning but i dont think it works that well in the end and just gets kinda plodding. the guitar is good but is so much less memorable to me than basically any of Gilmour's prime stuff

    im curious what do you think of the folkier songs on Meddle?

    i swear do you not visualize a cop tv show with a white dude in suit almost bald chasing a white dude in black with a mask through vhs video quality when u hear the song??? with angles going from roof to roof etc

    anyway you’re spot on the bass sets up the song for something but idk the steel guitar really tames the energy of the song

    the folk songs are good there, pillow being the one that benefits the most through the band presence and davids voice so it’s folk not tho folky, then it gets folky bluesy, like seamus which is heh but at least it’s short and in good contrast to the serious and long journey that is echoes so im cool with it

    but still that’s why i put meddle above, outside the two big pieces

    and u?

    lol, i can kinda see that image now

    i love pillow of winds and especially Fearless. always skip the last minute though wish they didnt include that. i like how the folkier ones contrast with echoes a lot. i always wished for there to be another song in the style of One of These Days/Echoes instead of one of these days. Echoes used to be my #1 PF song but it fell in my rank, still amazing but not quite peak. same level as atom heart mother suite tbh

    san tropez kinda nice but its weird for them so i think some people look down on it. imagine Wall era Roger Waters singing "as i reach for a peach"

    did you know that the photo of the guy taking a dive with the absence of splash that u can found inside the album wish you were here sleeves is unedited? here’s a zoom on him:

    it looks fake, but it’s not, they had him hold that position in shallow water until the ripples went away, using a breathing tube.

    (part 1 of 2)

    in 2001 the label decides to put together a new pink floyd best of and there’s some cool and funny facts, trivias and stories to it

    david gilmour:

    There’s been the occasional phone call but no great brainstorming sessions to get us all together. All our stuff is conducted through our engineer James Guthrie, who coordinated Echoes from his place in Lake Tahoe.

    for those who don’t know james is the producer of the wall and also coproduced the final cut, the idea here was to give the compilation a feeing that echoes (!) the bands concept (well prog era really) albums by making it so that each songs here -even tho the best of covers the bands work from the 60s all the way to the 90s, a lot of material and different sounds to work with- blends into another without any musical break, when needed

    so sometimes you get quite a trip, the selection of the track list therefor is made in order to fit a good transition and help that process instead of chronological setlist, you get surprising stuff like at the start you jump from a 1968 song to a song from 1979 lol, two works apart production wise.

    roger waters on naming the album “echoes”:

    I had to, because the name the boys came up with was so awful. What was it? 'Sum of the Parts'. See what I mean?"

    david gilmour on the track list:

    We’ve been arguing about the track listing since May. Nick sent us a list right at the beginning, then he seemed to lose interest. Rick never seemed to want to get involved in it. It wandered along rather fitfully until recently, when I thought I'd better work out what we should be trying to do with it, whether we should try and represent every album or not, and on what basis we should be choosing songs. In the end we had to get everyone to vote on a list. (...) I agree that most of the songs seemed to have picked themselves. When I look at it, it's bloody obvious really. It's amazing how long the process has been getting it sorted out.

    besides it being obvious, the track list actually caused some controversy within the fanbase as the compilation doesn’t have any songs from more nor ummagumma, thank god, they’re not major, but most noticeable they skipped songs from atom heart mother and obscured by clouds (as if that one isn’t underrated enough) so that’s where the scandal makes more sense

    to make up for that it is the only best of that includes the song “echoes” but that comes with a price tho: it’s also the only best of that includes “when the tigers broke free” no one asked for that roger

    here are according to james, some proposed songs for the compilation selection that were ultimately rejected:

    interstellar overdrive
    scarecrow
    chapter 24
    careful with that axe, eugene
    grantchester, meadows
    atom heart mother (edited, prolly a shorten cut)
    if
    fat old sun
    fearless
    san tropez
    breathe
    brain damage
    eclipse
    dogs (really sheep over dogs?)
    mother
    young lust
    nobody home
    your possible past
    the gunner’s dream
    paranoid eyes

    im thinking this is maybe the maybe only worthy best of the band because of the producer effort put into it and the song selection covered the majority, on top of the fact it had echoes which is an essential piece to the bands painting

    (part 2 of 2)

    now here’s the fun part tho, storm thorgerson did the artwork and had lots of fun with it by making a new original set referencing the bands entire legacy and history with lot of easter eggs

    front cover

    the first thing that gets our attention right off the bat is the “window into window” whole style to it which is taken straight from “ummagumma”

    inside the first room:
    1 the maid on the left is from “a momentary lapse of reason”
    2 idk what the heater is about
    3 the masks on the right (this scan is pretty dark ugh) all the band members faces masks used on “is there anybody out there?”
    4 by the first window: a mini pig for “animals” and mini cow for “atom heart mother”

    outside the first room:
    1 outside the red veil is from the sleeves of “wish you were here” same with the diver on the right
    2 another little pig by the second window

    inside the second room:
    1 the bed from momentary lapse on the left
    2 the couple are from “a collection of great dance songs” cover
    3 the photo on the wall on the right is “meddle” cover, the ear in full display
    4 right below that are the two heads statues from “division bell” (that’s the best spot you could get storm? why not outside far away behind the trees?)
    5 a plane toy on the ceiling.. “learning to fly” the song ig?
    6 another little cow on the third window! ok we get it storm lol

    outside the second room:
    1 a big view on grantchester meadows
    2 a rower for the signs of life video ???
    3 and last but not least one of the business dude from wish you were here

    back cover

    inside the first room:
    1 the hammers on the wall on the left is from “the wall”
    2 photograph bellow is from the single “point me to the sky”
    3 on the tiny table: fishbowl for wish you were here song lyrics? hand mirror for “on the turning away” cover? the little cow again for atom heart mother (that’s a lot of cows now from an album that’s not on the best of ) and the photo i can’t tell but it looks like some more photos of this best of covers?
    4 soldier on right from back cover of “the final cut”

    outside the first room:
    1 on the left is the other businessman from wish you were here, the one burning, look at his suitcase it has postcards too from the album
    2 the target thing is one of the division bell statue eye
    3 the axe for careful with that axe, eugene (at least these give credits to the producer list of songs that didn’t make the best of!)
    4 notice all the white bricks very distinctive, that’s obviously for “the wall”
    5 that little shiny transparent pyramid (tryna to summon a rainbow?) on the window is for “the dark side of the moon”
    6 the bike for the song “bike”

    inside second room:
    1 the photo on the wall on the left is the artwork for the “shine on” boxset (ugly assss s*** wtf storm?)
    2 on the shelf bellow? “a saucerful of secrets” bottles?
    3 what’s that thing bellow the window??? the cover of “relics”? can’t tell, too dark lol
    4 the guy on the right is mr bulb from “delicate sound of thunder”
    5 photo on the wall on the right is the cover of “the piper at the gates of dawn”
    6 idk what the balloon thing on the ceiling is for mmmm

    outside the second room:
    1 a field with a big white sheet?????? idk what that is

    @stillness
    @RVI
    @wusgood
    @Federico
    @Vtticvz
