Because their reviews blow and they're a culture vulture outlet

miserable review
p4k houses and publishes some amazing music writers, and id say their reviews have only gotten better, especially when they stopped doing these essay-type reviews like the one you linked. it is not as ironic and non-serious as it was before. its hard to argue on the merits of each individual review because unlike one-person operations this is a publication and it houses multiple writers, contributors, all with different opinions and ways to discern an album. so even if I post a few good examples somebody might inevitably post another review and dissect it on its individual merits
plus, their Sunday reviews for classic albums are also amazing and put me on a TON of s***, and I consider myself fairly well-versed in older music
if you asked me to pick pitchfork or another aggregator like rym in terms of quality review id pick pitchfork in 100 out of 100 cases. theres not one other publication that is doing the same thing and still gets people going about whether they got it right or not
you can wonder how pitchfork is irrelevant in every single thread made about a pitchfork review but we all know that truly irrelevant ones are those that we don't even think of when it comes to criticism

RYM clearing P4K any day of the week
Tens of thousands of aggregated opinions forming a general consensus>Three hipsters trying to get clicks

That was a review from 2000 in the essay era the guy mentioned, P4k has gotten less annoying but more boring over time IMO, but occasionally they hit the nail on the head and this Travis review is one of those times for me

you're posting literal 20+ year old reviews from a time of which most people actually have extreme positive nostalgia for p4k being edgy and an actual 'tastemaker' publication lol, what relevance is that to p4k of 2023

pretty much.
dude is posting funny reviews from the actually spiky, edgy era of p4k as opposed to the mostly boring poptimism conde nast version lol

There isn't anything funny about that review lol
It's pretentious and stupid

RYM is by design the most pretentious place on earth and probably the absolute worst and most racist review site when it comes to rap music opinions. an influx of post-tpab rap fans did irreversible damage to its album ranking, scoring, and review format. again by design it provides noting substantive as 99% of reviews can be boiled down to 'I liked it' or 'somebody might like it'. its has its place but its subpar music a***ysis. not to mention the quality of writing which is also abysmal being that, understandably, not everybody is a writer, but anybody can leave a comment there
these kid a type of reviews are under every single zoomer classic album of the month on RYM and they are impossible to read just the same

just a blind, overlong hate screed against popular consensus
I ain’t gonna lie I like the album quite a bit less than first listen)
But this “In an attempt to give the world a true blockbuster rap album, the Houston rapper delivers a shiny, empty spectacle loaded with pop superstars
who rarely make an impact.”
Is low-key accurate
I think the album is missing some of the catchy melodies that made Astroworld good, there's few but not as many

a bunch of nerds that actually got time to waste to rank and catalog something as pointless as the albums that they listen to, most of them of a certain age and a certain demographic (me being one of them) is not a popular consensus. it is opinions of internet music fans, a niche category of listeners that have no bearing on the actual consensus of most music consumers
they circlejerk albums as they seem fit, have preset expectations and notions of what they 'appreciate' in music, and it all stems from circles where it was cool to have an opinion on music, which by default makes it pretentious. I gotta say there are more than a few instances where its less overbearing within RYM itself; once again most older music is not being brigaded and left for the enjoyment of a few who actually found their way to the website outside of content era. nevertheless, these people are not an entity, unlike a very specific group of fans operating within a specific group of genres
the average rym user only appreciate a rap album if there is something "innovative" in it

interesting point re: older albums, actually, and I completely agree.
RYM was ruined by all the Fantano fans going on there and turning it into a weird popularity contest by proxy instead of just cataloging their listening habits, discussing and reviewing albums etc
Why do yall always feel the need to go after the writers of these reviews when they give it a score you don't like? The album is still going to be best selling rap album of the year and no one is forcing you to change your own opinion of it.
2nd best selling rap album of the year. But your point stands lol
