Tidal is ballad-y but with a lot of jazz influence.

Extraordinary Machine sounds kinda whimsical to me but I still love it

Bolt Cutters sounds like a fusion of When the Pawn (groove) and Idler Wheel (percussion, lyricism) to me, both of which were my favourite albums of hers before this one

Nah you're being too kind to the people hating on this itt. I didn't listen to anything besides rap/rnb til HS/College, I won't fault anyone for not exploring new genres but I'd recommend it. But the posters ITT s***ting on the album aren't just listening coming in and saying they don't like it, maybe 1 or 2. But the majority of posters itt s***ting on it, several without even listening, aren't far removed from the mfers that used to say s*** like "You can't spell crap without rap." If it ain't for you it ain't for you but it's lame to s*** on an album from a genre you don't listen to.

I didn’t mean itt meant in general this thread obv gonna be a mess

ppl lame af on here . ppl who never listen to any other fiona apple or art pop type s*** will listen pretend to know what’s going on and call it a classic

other niggas just won’t listen and call it trash

Listening to albums from the same genre, or even 5 albums a year, all of which contain Drake features, doesn't make someone stupid or less of a person. It just means that I care less about their opinion on albums that are way outside of their comfort zone. It wasn't made for them and they're not worse people for not liking it. Who cares?

That being said, fetishizing the popularity of music instead of the art itself and acting like anything that's slightly outside of the norm is tryhard critic bait is such a boring way to approach music. I feel bad for people who think that way.

    exactly. preach

same thing for white people trying to talk about hip hop glad we agree

would you recommend it as an introduction to her?

It was a great album, but I don't know about her other music

  • Apr 17, 2020

Finally got a chance to listen to the first two songs off the album and I already hear a well crafted piano based, blues inspired album. Literally had niggas say they listened to the first ten seconds of this and called it too white

We get it,you don’t know music

i here what @02Shaq and other ppl itt are saying. but the RULES are different for these artists and thats why i dont have the motivation to hear this s***.

fiona apple leaves a mistake in the track and its patriarchy-defying "art" (literally what the review says @ one point). if a black artist did that then theyre "lazy".

    Bro.
    Stop making it about Race/Culture.

Just listen to the f***ing MUSIC.

    Don't worry bout critics opinions.

I dunno bruh... have you paid attention to how thug was hailed as avant-garde, at least when he first broke out in 2013/14? Doesn't seem dissimilar to me.

Plenty of people just respond to art which breaks with conventions.

happens on multiple layers within this music s*** not just on the level of pitchfork. and i cant fill up another page detailing it.

I'm sure, even know, racism does exist in criticism, I'm just not convinced in manifests significantly in this aspect. This is more a case of whether the artist can convince they are in control of their work and intentions and also how "legitimate" their art is seen to be. If Beyonce left a mistake in a track, I'm convinced you'd get the same reaction as Fiona has. And if certain other white female, even male, artists did the same, they'd probably be sneered at by critics.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

right and i feel as if the "legitimacy" of art is determined in racially biased ways these days man. but i see what youre saying. i hope i enjoy it too

If you like Folky type of albums with organic production, then you will like it. It’s a good album overall but not a 10/10 imo.
P4K just loves her. Her last album 8 years ago got a 9. So her comeback album which is good naturally gets a 10.

i mean not only PF, it's a 100 on meta

    it’s okay

with most highly rated albums i can at least understand why it got the score it did, but i cant with this

like i would even understand a high score tbh, but a 100 on metacritic? from over 17 reviewers? sounds like pandering to me

edit: and i would say this about any album with a 100 on metacritic, no matter the artist

I assume the absence between projects is a large factor. Her last album (which was just as positively received) was 8 years ago.

that shouldnt be a factor though

and it wasnt just as positively received, it is not a 100 on metacritic

It definitely shouldn’t, but it is.

I didn’t mean literally of course — but this current album is 100 out of 17 reviews. The previous one (lmao look at the full f***ing title of it) is 89 out of 35.

I’d assume when this gets more reviews it will drop from 100. Or not. Maybe they’ll keep the circlejerk going
