The 10/10 reviews are as laughable as this review imo, maybe even more so

Clearly Kendrick’s weakest album and these peasants are rating it 10/10

GNX is mid and it's still better than FATD. Both can be true.

the a***ysis of kendrick’s moral high ground being incredibly blurred was spot on

weak sauce ass argument, dudes from any alphonse core album kill 200 people with one bullet and now im supposed to care about kendrick representing neoliberal values or some s*** as if rap is not the most direct cultural product of capitalism and s*** goes both ways for any given rapper

This argument makes no sense if you stop to consider the massive difference in public perception between these 2 types of artists for one second. Discussion is relevant off that alone.

i cant speak on public perception because i dont control it. yes kendrick been had a bit of a funny image going all through this career but i genuinely cant imagine caring for him more than even Common whos an irl democrat shill or Questlove who is incredibly obnoxious and annoying but still gets his props, and also a status quo shill. s*** people love Pharrell and hes a grade a moron and literally has no soul in him

morals are cool because its a way to get people stuck on conversing without doing anything meaningful past it

its unfortunate how the only way some these hip hop writer/journalist people can survive is by generating contrast opinions. like they obviously dont wanna turn into ak type of media figure even though it obviously pays the bills hand over fist. but its the only way they can get something going and put something on their resume.

dude wrote a de la soul book and they hit him with a public boycott, its f*** de la soul for life after that btw. jayson buford dropped that mac miller essay but cant be found anywhere, hes trying to do this dumb kendrick is a neoliberal symbol bullshit too. alphonse at least creates some consistent buzz around him and i generally love him but of course hes gonna think harder on this one over any 23 min weird raps tape he can slap bnm on during a slow week because the rest of the staff cant be f***ed discerning it but they think 'uhrh theres definitely something there alphonse!'

I used to read Pitchfork religiously and believed that even if I disagreed with a score, the editorial team had made a thoughtful decision when determining it.

Now we have guys who got a C in their community college creative writing course s***posting in longform about how Kendrick sucks and Ken Carson is "actually good now."

P4k among other publications created their own image of Kendrick that they brought to the readers. Now they're criticizing their own idealization of him. TPAB's instant critical acclaim was partially due to this (album was considered a masterpiece before it came out). They are the neoliberals who created this image he doesn't want to wear. Let him live.

the first two yg albums, he was tryna recreate gkmc and tpab albums (and he succeeded).

gnx feels like kenny recreating one of the weaker yg albums.

I don’t think it his worst personally, I think 8/10 is about what it deserves, it’s certainly not perfect though as some of these reviews imply
