MAVI announced his third album, Shadow Box, due out on August 9. It’s the follow-up to 2022’s great Laughing So Hard It Hurts, and about it, he writes, “I was really sad about the last album. I didn’t really know how to get back into making stuff into the way I like. I felt really hopeless about it, started getting really drunk, dealt with love and heartbreak, having to be there for my family. I had to come back and really learn how to make art all over again. My path back was centered around visual art, fashion, interior design, and design as an artistic framework and as an organizational force in society. A lot of the backbone of the album came from my time with this design book, The Black Experience in Design. The idea I gained from that is design is power. The ability to determine the order of things, the way things are supposed to be…that’s power. The orderliness in the lives of the devoutly religious became an attractive subtext during the creation of this album.”

Listening on the train home from work rn

Mavi def wrote all this as therapy for himself

    Fav tracks:
    20000 leagues
    Open Waters
    I Did
    The Giver

Inspiring me to write again, one of the only few to do it

he came in the scene one of the best in the game but ever since that Jack Harlow tour I haven't felt that same energy from him that I felt till '21 ngl

was pretty let down by the last album, like it grew on me a bit but the sound just was nowhere near as interesting as everything before.

need to peep to see if he's recovering a bit, that first single was a bit more solid at least, I'm scared to get bored by the prod again tho

    Top Tracks:

    my own way
    im so tired
    drunk prayer
    the sky is quiet
    open waters
    the giver

this is really good, i appreciate his discography a lot so far.

all his albums have their own identity and you can tell each album represents a moment in his life. it's beautiful and all i can say is i hope he good mentally

    This album is heavy

  • Aug 9, 2024

It's alright, I like it a lot more than the last one, but I still don't see myself playing it back a bunch. Favourites are 'i'm so tired' and 'the giver' though. '20,000 leagues' and 'my own way' are cool too.

Ultimately it's all quite repetitive and not adventurous enough now. Maybe I'm just tired of rap.
