It's hard to tell exactly what is really happening because of the fog of war but one indication that this isn't going as well for Russia as expected is their inability to establish total air supremacy over Ukraine.

The Ukrainians are reporting today that the Russians have lost 37 military planes and 37 Helicopters. (weird that they're the same number but whatever)

Even though the Russians have many more aircraft than that, a large part of their air force has stayed grounded.
Here's an article about that, they speculate that Russia has a limited supply of Precision Guided Missiles, further depleted by their use in Syria, so they are left mainly with unguided armaments.

There are some reports coming in however that several Russian SU-35s are taking off from Belarus in the last few hours. During Russia's conflicts in Syria these were the only planes they armed with PGMs

People wouldn't be sanctioning Russia and giving even the most questionable arms of the Ukrainian military weapons and aid if that was true.

Again as I try to make clear I think both sides are often lying so instead we are forced to believe people on the ground often black people or non Ukrainians who have citizen but only have allegiance to the truth

no one wants a direct conflict of themselves vs Russia, mainly because of the existence of nukes, so instead they are leveraging Russia with economic sanctions and by sending weapons to the Ukrainians.

We see video footage of Russian military letting Ukrainian traffic pass with right of way . We’ve also seen a tank crush a car . I’m here to assemble a full picture. TLDR/ELI5: the West don't want to engage with Russia directly due to the threat of nukes, therefore they are handing Ukraine non-lethal, and lethal military support and imposing sanctions on Russia in an attempt to make them fold.
