Let's be real, the ussr hurt many people who weren't aristocrats or major landowners, and even if they were capitalists they often didnt deserve such heavy crackdown for owning a field slightly bigger than average

And modern day russia is fascist in the sense that the security apparatus cut a deal with the oligarchs around the turn of the millennium where those who don't oppose Putin will be protected and those who do fall out of window. The security holds power and embeds oligarchs interests. You see patterns similar all over Russian history. The place just seems to have an authoritarian character

Just injecting some reality in here

Either way to cry about capitalists being oppressed in the USSR and simultaneously complain about Russian oligarchs is dumb, plankton and other liberals aren't just criticizing the excess of violence at certain points, but the violation of private property as a right altogether

I'm going off on a tangent but the violation of a sheep farmers or market sellers private property is in my opinion worse than seizing the land of someone who owns serfs, backed by the states enforcement

In either case, we can't feel sorry for either oligarchs or aristocrats. Cronyism from the start

There was a referendum in 1991 and most republics voted to preserve the union, including the country you so love, Ukraine.

“Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk described the referendum as "a farce and a circus," and warned Ukrainian citizens against participating.

"For our citizens who will participate in this — this is, in fact, an article of the Criminal Code," she said. "Do not to take part in any 'referendums.' Neither pressure, nor forceful incitement, etc., will be able to justify the fact that a person went to the 'referendum,'" she said.”

They’re basically saying that even if a Russian made you vote in the referendum at gun point you’ll be prosecuted

And if they’re supposedly sham referendums anyway why are they worried about their citizens participating

I'm not speaking on the second paragraph but yes the referendums will be a farce carried out at gunpoint and not carried out fairly. This isnt a lie

The place just seems to have an authoritarian character

Most sophisticated and least orientalist liberal a***ysis

    Read why nations fail

    Critical junctures --> extractive institutions

Predispose a nation to authoritarian governance

The mongol invasions delivered a critical juncture to early rus society that prompted Russia to be structured around expansion and autocratic rule

Do you actually believe this s***?

Institutions determine a states developmental trajectory. It isnt geography nor is it culture. It's whether they are set up to be extractive or open

The system of production lies one layer above that. That's the fundamental determinant

It's why centrally planning an economy develops and industrialises you for a while but 'doesn't produce sustainable growth past this point

Russia has never developed inclusive institutions

Whether you agree with the Ukrainian policy toward people who vote or not, the referendums are not legitimate and are a sham and shouldn't be thought of as anything else

The Russian troops overseeing them should be shot

vereshchyuk speaches often raise questions, but nothing like that came from that statement. basically a stop signal for ruski mir enthusiasts

or is it another "ukrainians killing themselves" stinky russian narrative?

Do you seriously think Ukrainians in kherson are going to look at what they're being subjected to and think 'more of this please' in a fair and equitable referendum.

    Seriously?
