Silasit does make sense for most countries to want this and they're not wrong for wanting to join NATO.
But Ukraine isn't just any independent country. They use to be part of Soviet Russia and Kiev is the birthplace of Russia. It's normal for Putin to be attached since he's from that Soviet regime and for security purposes. That context is very important.
If Ukraine were to join NATO and a conflict were to escalate between Russia and Ukraine, would you personally be comfortable for US and NATO forces to be in a large scale war with Russia?
Would you then be okay for a full nuclear war?
The reason why I'm asking you personally is because small events involving countries can snowball and affect US and the rest of the world when you have large alliances. That's how World War 1 started. We can't have something like that again.
I know it's unfair to Ukraine and it's messed up to say this but to prevent further conflict and to have peace, Ukraine CAN'T join NATO.
There's just too much at risk.
I honestly do agree with you, I just dislike the people who blame Ukraine for starting the war because of it. Ukraine has a right to explore NATO if they want, if NATO says no because too much is at risk, they also have that right.

Zelensky was minutes away from being home free, and he would have had the deal and new commitments from the Trump administration. The point Vance made was directed against Biden and the media, taking them to task for speaking in moralistic terms. This offended Zelensky, and that began the argument.
