TPAB was literally about how long can you stay in the black neighborhood which sometimes deals with jealousy then popped like nipsey

you have to be honest with yourself in these situations about cycles and being ostracized by both sides

I’m just gonna tell you as someone who knows a lot of actual industry executives, one man’s view of a predatory deal is another man’s view of risk management. In honesty, it’s very rare that a deal is just straight up on paper exploitative these days - the people giving those deals are not major labels, they’re small independent labels that “discover artists” and are often owned by people in the community. Like if I was from Houston or Compton and a local label contacted me, I would guarantee their contract was 100x worse and more exploitative than a major label. It’s not even their fault necessarily - it’s just a function of how they manage risk. You can guarantee artist’s imprint labels are 2x worse by default than any direct major signing. There are a lot of industry critiques for it being a monopoly (which are all true, esp how distribution works) but “predatory deals” really are increasingly a historical pre-modernity thing from the Vinyl and early CD era. Let’s say a deal with a label is $500k upfront and then $500k marketing and all with a 1:1 recoup - album flops completely and artist gets a $1 royalty. Is this exploitative? From an artistic point of view maybe, from a financial point of view no. But I can’t blame artists for putting their art first, of course no one will think the financial situation surrounding their art is valid. If you underperform and make no money, they exploited you. If you over perform and they take their % of your profits, you earned it and not them. Industry executives are sleezebags for a lot of reasons but the contacts aren’t the #1 reason.

I work independently in entertainment industry investing & consulting. I’m not a super high level guy or anything by any means but I know how most entertainment industry (music, games, movies) operations work and have met high level people directly or indirectly before.

i think it’s a mix but also not stated enough how validating it feels as a creative to be approached by someone who sees value in your work, even if it’s superficial and predatory. i think youjg artists see record deals as a symbol of legitimacy more than they see it as a legally binding agreement that might inhibit them more than enable them.

Ya a record deal be feelin like a college degree tbh

like a fine artist being represented by galleries

Giving advice is really hard and I never want to sound generic or presumptuous. With that said, the two biggest things (three?) that helped me were targeted low compensation contract work and intensive networking. You have to really know what your end goal is and then remember you can’t replicate how other people got to their positions. Some people look at executives and think they can follow the same path as how they got there. The reality is you gotta think smartly in a business sense of how to gain goodwill and remain independent, almost like a 10 yr plan. Remain diligent and remember connections are everything. It’s not just money, it’s the ability to get things done. Building a portfolio and being able to weasel your way into conversations you think you don’t belong in goes a long way. I wish I could be more specific but it’s really hard. Being smart in business planning and networking is the most important - remember you aren’t just building yourself up you’re building a business/brand you’re just at the masthead of.
