Team and label often go hand and hand they got no talent so they milk the bread winner
I’ve seen this happen with my own eyes to probably the most influential artist in Rnb from the 2010s and it’s been paining me since

Chance had a manager who was his gos friend who played him and that nigga indie with political connections dad it can happen to anyone
They got no talent so or their artist dropped they got to scramble to next deal so they going to do what gets them the money
exactly either that or they are doing whatever to make the artist that brought them success or a career happy which might mean turning a blind eye to the things that will help them grow as a human being

People underestimate how predatory “team” deals are and can because they’re not labels and not seen as scary “big businesses” or don’t have lawyers. It’s not uncommon to see an artist who has a manager they sign early on when they’re just friends who have a ridiculous term sheet saying the manager gets like 25-30% of the artists’s revenue in exchange for managerial duties and promotion. Artist gets big and signs to a label, who wants another 40%. Artist then wonders why tf they have a limitless contract with their manager who’s getting just as much as them with less obligation and work.

Like honestly a chunk of prob 70% of managers aren’t doing s*** these days it’s a good gig cause they do like 10 mins of work a week it makes sense when you’re small but when you’re big the responsibilities get divided up so much the question starts being why tf is this guy even here

lol imma just say that a manager should probably help an artist build credit and build their business acumen instead of putting a house in their name bc of short term logistical reasons, but that’s why some managers in this game get ahead and can build a roster of star artists and we wonder why artists go flat or don’t reach the heights they should long term

but that’s why I like what Brent has done and his manager in general, taught someone how to fish instead of fishing for them
thus creating an ecosystem where everyone eats
Giving advice is really hard and I never want to sound generic or presumptuous. With that said, the two biggest things (three?) that helped me were targeted low compensation contract work and intensive networking. You have to really know what your end goal is and then remember you can’t replicate how other people got to their positions. Some people look at executives and think they can follow the same path as how they got there. The reality is you gotta think smartly in a business sense of how to gain goodwill and remain independent, almost like a 10 yr plan. Remain diligent and remember connections are everything. It’s not just money, it’s the ability to get things done. Building a portfolio and being able to weasel your way into conversations you think you don’t belong in goes a long way. I wish I could be more specific but it’s really hard. Being smart in business planning and networking is the most important - remember you aren’t just building yourself up you’re building a business/brand you’re just at the masthead of.
Appreciate it. I’m not coming into it completely blind. Currently working on a project where things may start to take off for me and would like to make the most of it. If you offer any services or anything feel free to reach out

Management fees are nuts. Used to be awhile ago management would only take money on things they actually could achieve for you themselves as a sort of finders fee but now it’s not uncommon to see them just taking a % of the overall camp’s revenue, which is nuts
