Good evening as we close out with another drop. This time from 1978!
Brief Bio: Around the late 70’s Philip Bailey signed a few band’s to produce/co-write/ & look after. One of them was a group called “Free Life” With its energetic funky sound, Ir’s clear who the musical role model’s for this group was : Earth Wind & Fire
Other influences might include George Duke Band, Sly, P-Funk,Billy Preston, Unfortunately this group didn’t last long: 1 lp and a single, they disbanded. It looks like a few member’s decided to do the session work in the business rather than start another band. lp has a great energy to it.
What you get: the lp, the non lp single, remix rework of a song from that single, artwork. All out of print, brought to you by the magic of p2p file sharing all across the world.
Great harmonies-melodies-instrumentation
And they left with a great closing single with a banging hi energy disco pumping track & a gospel send up called “Something Better” cowritten by Jerry Peters.
Free Life were: Carl Carwell-David Straughter-Ernest Straighter-Julius Carey-Louis Russell-Robert Russell-Spencer Bean-Wayne Stalling-Winston Ford
The Tracklisting is: Smile/Stomp & Shout/It’s Lovely Just to Know You/Wish you Were Here/Spirit of Love/Say You Do/I’ll keep my light on the window/CornerStone/I Confess/Second Coming
And if we take a look at the credits, who do we see that sticks out?

Lee Rittenour, session jazz fusion guitar goat of the L.A. Scene, Larry Dunn with various synth solos, Jerry Peters on Organ on the first track & Paulinho Da Costa - OG percussionist for thousands of sessions & finally way at the bottom, we see a female legend with the gentlemen: Patrice Rushen. What a line up and it shows.
If you are new every weekend, I drop music in thread’s of album’s usually that have caught my ear lately or just randomly I will think about something and listen again. On Sunday I always drop something Funk-Soul R&B related. Whether it is a band, singer or songwriter, musician. I try to give a much needed window into the history of Black Music that is neglected. Every week for over a year I’ve kept dropping name after name that I think deserves a mention. Anytime you want to check anything out, search through post by post and you will see how much I’ve collected & put out there. Look at the top of the post, the following links will be available. If it isn’t on Spotify, Apple, you have to click the other stream link if you want to check it out. If you wish to DL it, you click the link under “DL LINK” and instantly your CPU gets to work and downloads the zip from my storage locker. Now let’s say you missed a few (okay let’s say you missed a 100 and you are a digital music file hoarder and you must have it) Just go to the post and go to the dl link and guess what? That’s right they don’t expire because it’s my storage locker. WOW
Whether you are a drop veteran to this thread pr a new hot shot pilot, you always have something different to listen to every Sunday if you love Funk-Soul-R&B. I have many many many more drop’s coming. Let me know if you wish to be notified. If you just want to follow along silently, every weekend Thursday-Sunday, I will drop music in between those days. I’ve done my service of the night, I’ve explained to you what this thread is about, I’ve given you a good selection of music to offer for Sunday and I’ve given you options in which you can experience it.
