Doctors get a bad rep, but ive never met a subset of medicine so deserving of hate than psychiatry. For anyone that has to go through this process im so sorry.

Self centered, arrogant, and robotic. Absolutely cold people. Wild s***. Just needed to vent

Working with a psychiatrist as a caregiver for a family member. The doctor can be extremely condescending, self righteous (doesnt like being wrong), and hard to find when s*** goes south.

And this isnt even the first doctor. Last one was treating my family like a guinea pig, just new medicines all the time. It hurts seeing them like that, i just dont know why its a common theme

Could be any doctor bro. Work with docs all the time and plenty of them are d***heads. Specialty doesn’t have a whole lot to do with it

I'm sorry y'all have to go through that fr

I had one psychiatrist tell me that alot of them are scammers

    • they just want to prescribe medecine and not talk to patients/treat them with appropiate therapy ,

    • they like to keep patients for far too long: some patients don't need to stay in facilities for more than a couple weeks but they'll prolong their stay to their (the facility)advantage and detriment of the patient

(all of the points mentioned above came from a longtime practioning psychiatrist)

I’d tried psychiatry, didn't have a good experience with any of them. It felt like they were giving me a pass for f***ing my life up. I’ve managed to find my peace on my lonesome, im sure it does good for many people but it’s not for me

Go confess your sins with a priest instead of seeking validation with a psychiatrist

The concept of masking problems with some of these anti-depressants that you need to be on for life is sus tho, especially when there are other avenues that can be explored but don't make profit like constant pill pushing.

  • It differs. Can't condemn a whole field because of your singular experience @op

  • You know, I've been thinking about this for a while actually, and while I don't necessarily agree that it's a scam, I think it definitely doesn't work for certain demographics/and can leave people more f***ed off then they already were (especially with white doctors and black patients), which is sad considering how much society tells you to "fix" your problems/gas you up into thinking there's something more wrong with you than there actually is.

Idk, for me, personally, I'd rather smoke weed and maybe talk to someone about what I'm going through than enter the medical space with my "problems", but I do respect it for those it works for.

I see both sides of this.

My psych and therapist experience has been 50/50. Psychs usually just treat you like a test subject throwing you on and off different meds rapidly. You can’t ever get what you need. It’s a mess. Therapy is a not one shoe fits all situation and you need to find the right therapist. It’s incredibly hard to do that when you factor in how hard it is to get an affordable one if you’re poor or that insurance pays for. So it’s almost take what you can get in a sense it sucks.

Currently I have the best Psych I’ve ever had in my life. She’s so patient, understanding, explains things to me in depth, doesn’t patronize me but also isn’t cold. I saw her yesterday to talk about my meds and it was almost like a therapy session. She could definitely be a therapist. On the other side my therapist is very not fitting for me. He over talks me, he repeats the same questions over and over even after I answer them, he’s a nice guy. We both love Bob Dylan and the Tarheels. But I don’t get much out of our professional relationship. He doesn’t really give me any tips or help. We kinda just talk. If I had to pay I wouldn’t.

I don't think anybody actually advocates "masking of problems." Those type of meds are supposed to alleviate or help manage the symptoms of the underlying issue temporarily. The underlying issue needs to be addressed while you're on meds or else your setting yourself up for disaster. Might be a red flag if you're on those d**** long-term.
