Government officials act like laws don’t apply to them. Because of qualified immunity, they don’t.
The Supreme Court created qualified immunity in 1982. With that, the court granted all government officials immunity for violating constitutional and civil rights unless the victims of those violations can show that the rights were “clearly established.”
It requires a victim to identify an earlier decision by the Supreme Court, or a federal appeals court in the same jurisdiction that precisely the same conduct, under the same circumstances, is illegal or unconstitutional. If none exists, the official is immune.
If you’ve ever wondered why government officials don’t seem to care about your rights, the Constitution or the law, qualified immunity is why.
Government officials are expected to hold themselves to a higher standard. We, the people, expect them to operate at a higher standard. Qualified immunity is not something that should exist.
Government officials should have no concern about qualified immunity if they don’t infringe on citizens rights or the laws of our land. If government officials break our laws, or deprive citizens of their rights, they should be held accountable.
End qualified immunity.

I think they should also make it a law (if it’s not already) to refuse and report unlawful orders. You hear the “just following orders” line too often. Idk how it could be implemented specifically but that mentality that it’s ok because you were told to do it needs to go
My brother learned about this in first year law school. Its literally how 99% of cases are done. Just referring back to older cases with similar traits and make a case

very important thread, never heard of this until now. as I said in the George Floyd thread, one of the most alarming things of the past few days is the violation of constitutional rights. this will lead to a slippery slope towards fascism and dictatorship.
we should all sign the petition and get on our congressmen to support the bill before it's too late
