no. I really doubt you know anybody who would lie on an anonymous poll about race. Yeah plenty of white kids wish they were black but I really doubt any of them actually think they are black. You're saying they would lie on an anonymous survey. They are hypothetically lying about their identity completely to themselves. Its like a gay guy going home to his own apartment and then still pretending to be straight when nobody is looking. And that does happen, people get these internalized beliefs about how they must be straight and being gay is bad and not who they really are or whatever. But that doesn't really translate here. I really f***ing doubt any white kid actually thinks they are black, they would have to be straight up delusional for that to work, no matter how embarrassed they are to be white.

You're right though, this is probably a projection of my own insecurities on the people who'd call me slurs back in the day because I was a shade darker than them. I just genuinely have a lot of distrust of white suburban culture to this day in my late 20s because of the s*** I'd hear people say and do to me and my friends.
