I wouldn’t say dead, but it is diminishing returns. For example Jungle Brothers -> Tribe/De La -> Mos/Dilla and Kanye….you see a trajectory and building off of previous benchmarks and pushing it to new frontiers, but you can hear the roots of it and something new built on a foundation.

Today, I feel like even the folks who are influenced by my faves who I should like don’t eclipse them or come close to it. Could be generational bias. But I just find myself thinking ___ did it better anyways so this doesn’t really stick for me.

The genre is in a great place, I think that with how music consumption has changed over the last decade, you’ll never get another Drake/Kendrick/Cole artist in terms of commercial success again. That could be said about any genre to be honest.

the people saying that hip hop is in a good place im almost certain didnt experience the height of 2000s and early 2010/ hip hop. nobody is saying there arent dope records coming out by hip hop artist its just the cultural zeitgeist is dwindling and we arent seeing prolific artist anymore.

for almost 25 years hip hop was creating some of the strongest pieces of modern culture. complete paradigm shifts when certain artist came out

but this is really just another monoculture conversation because this could possibly apply to all genres and creative mediums.
