there's still exciting rap music coming out, but it is going through a major identity crisis rn and it's kind of lacking leadership with its artistic direction atm

in the 2010s we had a lot of inspiring figures in the mainstream, most notably Kanye, who would help reinvent and push forward the genre and make it one of the most exciting radical things to break through to a larger audience. it was always about bringing something new and different to a large audience.

I think a major turning point is that in 2018 rap officially became the bestselling genre in the world and with that its whole self-perception of being underground became very contradictory.

more of a hot take but another thing I see over these past years is how this image of America leading the world stage etc under this second Trump administration has completely flipped to US straight up not even making pretenses anymore about being the villain. and whether or not you like it rap culture is very wrapped up in rags to riches, american dream culture. post-BLM there's also a lot more awareness of all these insidious mechanics of systematic racism or of generally toxic culture in rap regarding misogyny and other s*** too. whether or not you even actively think about this stuff, these discourses hang over us all and as an artist it makes it increasingly weird to navigate the genre.

it's a lot of factors coming together but the mainstream rn is in fact completely vapid and an empty shell of what rap set out to be, the true spirit of it is only living on in regional and underground scenes like DMV or outside the US - the UK scene rn is lowkey more innovative and Palestine got one of the most exciting scenes in the world... I'm not worried about it, reinvention is the nature of the game and I see it as a good thing that there's such a heavy downward trend rn, it's rife breeding ground for something new and better.
