Something for the weekend uhhhhhhhhh ohhhhhhhhhhh
Raphael all over this with the shadow background vocal harmonies of these 2 talented half brothers & with his instrumentation.
This album is I wonder if they named themselves that because of "Shuggie Otis"
The story goes like this, these 2 talented half brothers in the 90's were building noise in the streets, Raphael hears their demo tapes & is excited to collaborate. Raphael signs them under his Pookie Records imprint just off the strength of their demo tapes. The project is recorded. The deal falls through with interscope when Distribution is changed and Otis/Shugg are put in limbo. Thje project's promo is released in Taiwan accidentally and never heard from 99.9999 of the states.
UNTIL 2005 when Expansion records in the UK requires the rights to finally release this on their imprint. And then after some time it goes out of print. I found this lp looking for something else on discogs. Instantly I am interested as soon as I see who the producer is and here you have the lp after a quick torrent search. Thus my new soul sundays is birthed and delivered to you.
This album is going to throw you for a loop. The vocals are just sublime.
Another surprise for the week.
So westcoast playa - there are touches of new jack/swing beat & g-funk on here. There is plenty to enjoy and surprise you as a nice full rounded project clocking in at 72 minutes.
Also included is a solo lp from Otis Cooper as well. Very D'Angelo influenced from the harmonies on this solo project. Very nice keyboardist & producer as well. So you get 2 lp's. 1 lp is out of print & the other one is currently streaming on all platforms. It's a nice drop to close out the weekend.

That call your name flip, oh mercy with those strings and that synth bass on "This is myyyy phooooooone call" with those vocals and the passing on the lead's. Mercy.
If anyone is wondering the melody quotes from Journey
The acoustic guitar solo opening:
Hung up on my baby aka the sample from My Mind playing tricks on me :
and the string quote following the guitar solo of "Journey" right after the singer says "Round and Round we goooo" is from "a few more kisses to go" also isaac hayes. Just looked that up because i recognized the redman sample from "Tonights Da night" .
On phone call there's Switch's "Call your Name"
Isley's between the sheets. But the difference is there's are replayed snippet samples
great stuff to peep the level of detail in this project
Oh yeah that guitar solo on journey, instant download
wait til you hear Phone Call "Thissss is myyy phone call to yooooou baaaaybbaaay " both versions
Let's go
You have to wonder how many project's/song's were recorded on Pookie Records.
Here's the bootleg from Asia 1995. They just used the tape promo and pressed it on a CD and pretended it was from Atlantic. OMG.... I just found this on a scan site.
As you can see, it's a slightly varied tracklisting
Sidenote: @AudioConsulting I was typing "Shugg" into Tidal and stumbled on this:
Some fire Blues. Have you heard of this guy Shuggie?
BTW if you coming in years from now and we are all gone from the round up of concentration camps because we were too subversive in the U.S. - how you doing?
I probably still will find a way to pay for this storage locker and the link is still active
