I ported my AT&T number to Verizon without a pin swap , granted that was a bit before the big three started doubling up on protection
Iirc not too long ago even Twitter ceo Jack Dorsey got hit with a sim swap
Fwiw as a thought exercise I looked up a friends email on haveibeenpwned as found her password in a leak from canva, easy enough the numbers in her password were the same one she used on everything

I’m not saying it’s impossible. Like you said if you’re grandfathered in you probably won’t be prompted but I don’t see any major carriers today letting you make a line without a pin. It was a pain in the ass to move my number last year and it was MY account
