What exactly is the issue with the term? It's an accurate descriptor of popular black music at the time which incorporated more guitar and bass (rhythm) with somber lyrics (blues). A much better alternative than "Race Music".
Don't see how it is a***ogous to the "Urban" category at the Grammys.
Cause they both exist as just another bracket to throw Black people in.
Not really, traditional pop is just white people singing traditional R&B
Nah. Even Michael Jackson’s pop s*** was different than his R&B s***

You know what? I see your point, especially when any black person singing is labeled "alternative R&B".

Twigs talked about it when she first came on the scene. When people didn’t know what she looked like all the journalist would talk about how she’s genreless, unique, etc. then when they found out she’s mixed they instantly put her in the r&b/alt r&b lane

but it’s all MJ music, is it actually a case of him making 2 genres or is it just people making that distinction for some outside reason? His most popular thing is definitely still rhythm and blues. He probably started being considered pop once he broke down the wall and was more accepted by the white audience, not because he changed genres
Niggas be like I'm not pop, I'm rnb, oh wait you calling me rnb cause I'm black and singing? Call it something else
Go talk about a real problem

Or you can just ignore the thread. Nothing discussed in this sxn is a “real problem” dumbass

Maybe that's a real problem

What do you mean? He dabbled in multiple genres, funk, rock, new jack swing, pop ballads etc.

I would argue that all of those are forms of R&B with the slight exception of funk, but in the way MJ did it he did more of funk influenced R&B not straight funk

Obviously it’s all MJ music. But he was still doing two different types of sound. For instance, compare Black & White and Remember the Time. Two complete different sounding songs that were on the same album. One was Pop, the other was R&B.

They are different sounding songs and in the context of the 90s I can see why you would call them pop and R&B. But the entire idea of pop from the 60s to 90s was just white R&B. So I would say Black or White is still R&B it’s just a type of it that is more geared to white audiences
It did over time become its own sound, especially in the 90’s. But I think that’s an effect and not a cause.

Yes exactly, great point. 90s r&b definitely distinguished itself and I think that’s what a lot of people think of today in this conversation. But people forget that Chuck Berry was also rhythm and blues (as well as rock and roll which meant the same thing at the time), r&b doesn’t begin and end with the 90s r&b Sound. It’s much more expansive than that and pretty much any pop song is r&b
R&B is just a fancy word for feeling “bummed out”
nah this songs and others always makes me happy
