since yall just called me a racist when i asked this question last time cuz i called rick rubin a jew (which he is) i decided to do some of my own research.

turns out hes not a producer in the sense of someone who makes music. hes more like a coach.

this is from a fader article:

Rubin is a nontraditional producer. He doesn’t play any instruments, and he can’t operate a mixing board or a Pro Tools setup. In fact, he seems to be actively uninterested in spending much time in a recording studio. Instead, Rubin is best known for his talents as a listener, with his ability to offer insightful notes on how artists can improve their songs. He’s a kind of psychological problem-solver, skilled at getting artists to a creative place where they can record and finish the best album they can deliver. Here, Rubin discusses his uncommon approach to his uncommon job.

his "uncommon approach" is mentioned nowhere in the article

  • Dec 23, 2019

He's one of those "consultants" artists put too much weight into because they just so happen to be around back in the day when good artista were doing their thing.

And unlike someone like paul mccarthy, he isn't nearly as talented

so it's like a walmart version of eno's oblique strategies but as a person

do u know that jew is the correct term for followers of jadaism and descendants of israel?

i called him a jew because he is one. its like calling someone a muslim or a black person or anything like that

cant answer your question specifically because he is a private person

but let’s think logically here: with the amount of people he has worked with and helped across so many genres and levels, it is very obvious he brings something hugely important to the table. that should be enough to appease you

the ktt memes where something would be 'reduced' until rubin gives the thumbs up were some good times

  • Dec 23, 2019

art is a puzzle just as much as it is anything else

    he helps solve these puzzles

yeezus, for example, was over three hours long before he came in and helped solve it

  • Dec 23, 2019

when Kanye said he's a reducer I don't think it's just banter. I'd imagine he knows how to deconstruct art to the most important parts

no, that doesnt answer my question as my question is what does he actually do

but the article explains that he offers advice and coaching and does not create music

You have your Pharrells the people that make the beat and help the song come to life. Then you have people who can only make beats and can’t help the song come to life. Then there’s people like Rick Rubin he might not make the beat but he has the ear to say what that song needs or doesn’t need and how to take something to the next level. I never seen Diddy using pro-tools but he knows how to get a fire album or a hit out an artist.
