This s*** really hits different man. Probably the hardest celebrity passing since Kobe
This man really inspired me. Made it to the top of the world as an engineer/architect and artist. Him and Kanye are the two niggas that got me into art/fashion and s*** like that as a whole.
Bro hit every angle. Made an impact in music, fashion, art, sports, design, etc
RIP to one of my GOATs
can’t get all my words onto the screen, how to balance my feelings of neoliberalism and virgil but what i’ll say is this
we often look to artists like virgil as the proponents of the societal problems we wish to solve. this perspective fails to take into account how artists are equally (if not more sensitive!) to these issues. artists are more often than not, antennas to the society in which they are apart of.
the hard truth is that virgil didn’t create anything new as much as he saw where the future of fashion/art/music was colliding into, far sooner than any house, any ceo, any magazine could. he saw what the future was and helped guide multiple industries towards its inevitable future.
to say that virgil was a talentless hack or a staunch capitalist, is (imo) putting the blame on one man. and to say that about a man who has inspired millions of kids (and i truly do mean millions) to create is a shame. it requires more nuance than that.
i don’t agree with all of his ethos, but he will always be remembered for his dedication to creation and for breaking rules. his ability to circumvent industry is the art. and for so many black kids who tryna figure out “how to get to it” he was an idol in their eyes.
no matter how you slice it, we all gotta eat. and i’ll always applaud virgil for showing the weirdos, the outcasts, how to hustle.

Oh s*** I know why you quoted me now. Great minds
His kids are so young
Most of what people have criticized him for "selling out" over are his moves in the last couple years. Man was just trying to secure his family's future

Virgil's work has aged kinda ehh 2 me tbh but when I was in high school it was THE S***
his 5% design philosophy, the focus on reframing s***, etc was MASSIVE to me. The first ever thing I wrote on philosophy was literally directly inspired by him talking abt aesthetics and art. In a big way he's the reason I care about music, fashion, and philosophy to the extent I do now.
And yeah as ive become more politically/socially conscious and more knowledgeable in fashion I've grown out of off-white and the sort of uber-consumerism it embodies. But that won't ever change the fact that Virgil started me on so many things in life.
This s*** is so sad. Whenever I go on IG, you can see he was a friend to all he crossed and was really trying to encourage everyone to go after their vision.
I feel for virgil and my thoughts and prayers are with his family as an individual i'm sure he was amazing but tbh dude was just a proponent of luxury and materialism.
Though i commend his creativity it still doesn't takeaway from the fact that materialism is a subset of capitalism and ultimately not beneficial towards the greater good
$500+ basic cotton white tees and sneakers made in china in sweat shops selling for thousands of dollars
Not exactly someone i would personally idolize
thats cool
sucks you won’t see an iota of this communal love & mourning when you pass cause your ability to critique other humans and regurgitate ‘intellectual’ arguments is 1,000,000,000,000,000 times greater your ability to create anything meaningful to even one human being

Idk who needs to hear this and am unsure how to even articulate it right now, but if you’ve been feeling the way I have after hearing about Virgil’s passing and this s*** is weighing heavy on you: take care of yourself. I’m sure a lot of us are thinking more about physical health after learning about this, but mentally, this s*** weighs on us too.
As Black people especially, the loss and whirlwind of emotions we been on between the deaths of beloved figures like Kobe and Chadwick, to the public deaths of people like George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, we go through a lot. I’ve been seeing a lot of love for Virgil on social media, and that’s wonderful, but remember to take a break from all this and do what you can to make sure you’re good.
only time I ever ran into Virgil was at the Yeezus Tour in Tampa, and I was wearing one of the Been Trill Pacsun collab shirts bc my young ass couldn’t afford the original ones
what a kind guy he was
u just made me cry at 9 in the morning
man...
man imagine how I felt when that happened, i could never think how would it be to be noticed by someone like him, he was such a pure soul
Crazy. Are people more mortal now? What happened??? WHATS happening???
this is how life goes unfortunately
long life ain't guaranteed,
The good thing is Virgil was able to do a lot of things and inspire a lot of people while he was here
I’m still pissed about the post saying virgil wasn’t creative at all
Some of these motherfuckers have no respect for our heroes and it’s not ok
A lot of ignorant motherfuckers think Virgil just wrote on shoes or something, no you dumbass Virgil was apart of so much of the culture this very forum is shaped around. Look at the love he gets, the people he inspired from Kanye, to Frank Ocean, to Tyler The Creator, to Asap rocky, to Carti to so many more and you say he’s not creative? What f***ing mark do you plan on leaving on the world that gives you the right to s*** on Virgil the day he dies? That’s the most a ktt post has ever bothered me, like nigga a hero to the culture who shifted our perception of art just died and you wanna get on here and s*** on him
F*** the nigga who posted that and f*** everybody who liked that post, rest in paradise VIRGIL ABLOH
thats cool

Man, I’m thinking, at least for me, as I am individually blessed with more time and getting a little older for the time being, you inevitably see people, both in your personal life and icons, who’s time here will run out before yours as part of your journey. It’s the gift and curse of staying here. You get to see more come and you also see more go.
