0% chance this is better than The Witch and I would say it’s slightly below Lighthouse but still a solid movie that I’m glad was made

Thought this was good but not great. Somewhere around a 7-8/10 to me
Kinda wished the emotional stakes or the rough journey was more fleshed out. For an epic it felt kind of tame, especially with such a bombastic opening and ending.
The cinematography and action was so on point tho.

    Seeing this one now

Didn't get much out of it but I did make myself laugh imagining a movie exactly like this but about Islam and jihad and s***. Would probably be received very differently. Doing Star Wars at the end was also really good. Some unexpected laughs here.

Otherwise it was just kind of like The Revenant for viking stuff. Not much to glean from it besides appreciating it's anthropological qualities. I think The Green Knight was comparable and a little more thoughtful?

Similar yeah. I never felt too invested in the characters. And some plot decisions just felt a little too contrived.

I read this review after seeing it and pretty much agree with everything he says: https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20220411-the-northman-review-not-weird-or-violent-enough

He also brings up Green Knight, which was also the first comparison point that came to mind for me after seeing it. And I much prefer Green Knight

Green Knight was the definition of mid

So damn good. Ti West’s X is my favorite film of the year so far but I was really impressed with this. I think it’s about on par with The VVitch for different reasons but I think The Lighthouse still edges both out.

Idk what niggas be wanting man, this s*** was a Scandinavian myth brought to life. There were frames and shots in here that felt like a painting. Those valkyrie scenes? The final fight between Amleth and Fjolnir by the volcano???

it never felt like a single line of dialogue was wasted here man. Skarsgard was f***in beastly here and the way he switched between speaking in that low, almost demonic growl and being able to switch into that monstrous roar at the drop of a dime was f***in insane, I was fully immersed every time he spoke. This nigga commanded the screen.

Not to mention his amazing chemistry with Anya Taylor Joy. She was the perfect contrast with her cerebral and mystic persona complimenting his wolflike and feral demeanor.

And then you got Bjork who's role was haunting as f*** and left an impression even if it was essentially a glorified cameo.

I went in not knowing what to expect and i loved it, I just judged this on it's own merit. Between this and the weird nitpicks I've seen directed at Everything Everywhere All At Once, I think folks aren't letting the art sit with them or something man.

Because Eggers really did his homework here.

    Totally agree king

It’s so obvious and I didn’t realize it either. I didn’t even pick up on the Conan The Barbarian influence. It’s funny cause Lion King is also inspired by Hamlet and Robert Eggers in an interview called the berserker sequence the Hakuna Matata moment lol
