Id say it's more hollow and derivative in GTA (5 in particular) where you can tell they just bit a couple of movies hard as f*** and then didn't know where to take it after that. Red Dead was good but honestly can see where you're coming from, not like they didn't do the same thing for that narrative too
I'm imagining that you're referring to things like "Arthur is the most modern socially aware cowboy to ever walk the earth"
Arthur is especially egregious, yes. He's very video-gamey but not in a cartoonish way, as if I were supposed to take his existential plight seriously but there's nothing there but screenwriting clichés for Dummies.
I guess I don't have issues with GTA V because I'm actually having fun playing it. Most of the times, yes, I'm following a yellow line but I can be distracted and see and do things instead of riding for fifteen minutes in a photorealistic yet boring landscape and shoot for ten minutes hidden behind a wall
And some setpieces in GTA V do make me laugh. The bad taste is at the center. And I don't remember one heist in Red Dead II that is as enjoyable as the ones in V.
I believe VI is gonna try to aim at the best of both worlds.
But I mostly hope their level design won't be stuck in the nineties. A slightly better looking GTA with the same levels where you barely need to look at the screen or think will be very disappointing, and since people have been waiting for a decade, the backlash could be terrible.
Since when does little Jacob of all characters have a jafakin accent. What the f*** am I reading
Game is a f***ing classic dude, story is crazy
back when Rockstar made the stories elevate past the influences
Had a truly believable, at least in a "noir crime thriller" sense, plot, loved the development from coming fresh off the boat to dealing with undercover feds, pent houses, bank heists, etc. can really feel the progression in the severity of the crimes you take part in. Not for nothing, characters are complex, have their own situations lives and families, and they could die too!! Idk it was great!
Makes GTA v plot look like an adult swim pilot by comparison
Why do you act like you don't know what I'm talking about? Yes, Little Jacob has a fake Jamaican accent
This is what the voice actor actually sounds like

Every GTA/RDR game has missions/crimes that elevate in scale. This exactly what I mean. People praise the story of IV and act like it's completely new ground for the series when the game just has a more serious tone and isn't as colorful/openly goofy as the other entries so people automatically think it's more "mature" and therefore better
Not saying V has a better story than IV but I think people want something to give to IV as the best in the series and since it can't be gameplay/customization/graphics, it has to be the story

That's cool that he switched up his accent for voice acting, but I was still living in the Bronx when this s*** came out and that nigga has the most authentic (digital) Jamaican accent id ever heard so to each his own
and just cuz he switched his own speaking accent, doesn't mean the accent he switched to is a "fake one", just not his natural speaking one
And based on the end of your statement, just sounds like you don't like it that much which is fair too. But to act like the synergy of the gameplay, plot, characters, sound design, world design, and everything else in between doesn't make IV top 2 or 3 GTA is crazy, but once again, imo
V just felt particularly like a step down in the story department for sure, random goofy missions, no stakes, the literal FBI government has you doing black ops for them, just all over the place

I'm thinking you're right with the "best of both worlds" notion, I think they're doing that with VI as well. The world/citizen depth of RDR2 in a modern setting is gonna print money
Them not wanting to be hyper current in their writing could be a good thing too, it would just be sophomoric callouts and elbow nudging than anything worthwhile

Yeah, V's story was terrible and IV was definitely better. I'll try to play 3, VC and SA next year but from what I remember (and it's been ages, so I might be misremembering
), I didn't walk away from IV thinking it was this huge upgrade from SA in terms of actual plot and characters

You're right, I think mission design and freedom during missions will be the determining factor of VI's reception amongst gamers. People are starting to realize just how repetitive and on the rails GTA/RDR is during missions compared to the open world and it's been highlighted on popular videos like that one by NakeyJakey, Dunkey probably pointed it out too
I understand why Rockstar been doing it. You can't have players doing whatever tf they want like they do in the open world during missions. But if they're still doing the same "You fail the mission unless you do it exactly the way we want you to" thing, people are not going to be happy with VI

rockstar doesn’t really have an excuse anymore, kojima figured all this out with mgs 5 10 years ago atp they’re woefully behind the curve

Yeah but it's extremely difficult to keep things cinematic without them having mission control to some degree
Yeah but it's extremely difficult to keep things cinematic without them having mission control to some degree
Yeah, that's why I get Rockstar's reasoning for doing it. But they could maybe adopt a Dishonored/Deus Ex (obviously not to the same extent) type various options to succeed approach to some of the missions
And it's not just the main missions. I remember there was an example NakeyJakey pointed out in that RDR2 video about how to get into a secret poker game and Rockstar only allowed you to get in the way they wanted you to. They need to incorporate the "It's an open world, you can do whatever you want" philosophy that's always been GTA's identity into the missions/activities itself more

The video game character is very video gamey
Who would’ve thought
YouTube took that L today

If you weren't a proud idiot maybe you'd be able to think about what I wrote.

I don't understand people who say V was mid while praising GTA IV. Have you played IV in a while? V is vastly superior if I just, like, mess around for ten minutes. The world is better. The missions are better. Free yourself from the idea that the technical limitations of the time means that "gritty" is better.
A gta 4 remaster would genuinely blow V out of the water
4 is obviously pretty dated now but the story was leaps and bounds better than 5

Can’t wait to play this next year
