introduction/summary:

Bloodz Boi is a rapper/singer and DJ based in Beijing, an underground legend and innovator of Chinese cloud rap as well as experimental hip hop, crossovers to club rap, as well as ambient pop.

He's extremely tapped in with all kinds of underground hip-hop and experimental scenes worldwide and worked with some of the most talented people working today.

In 2015, as an event organizer, he flew out Lucki to China for his first ever international show (he told me the whole story in my interview with him).

After many collabs and singles exploring all kinds of different sounds he released his first album on Year0001 (famous for Yung Lean, one of his biggest inspirations, and Drain Gang). It's a unique blend of what I call "muted euphoria", trance buildups which never find a drop, over which he builds his spoken word singing.

For his second album he hit up ambient musicians Claire Rousay and More Eaze (among the most exciting voices in ambient of the past few years) and deviated even further from his rap background, singing poems of his over their emo-influenced sound design.

2023 sees him returning to his rap roots a bit, hitting up Lucki producers for a plugg EP as yy02 earlier this year and now Evilgiane and Harto Fallion of Surf Gang for an upcoming mixtape (along with one for TeamSESH featuring Bones, also coming soon)

You know, hip hop in China is pretty big now; there are a lot of big rappers, a lot of money. A lot of people in China are listening to hip hop now. It's very big on TV...There are even songs celebrating the government laughs.

first grabbed my attention by collaborating with claire rousay and made a fire ambient mix on NTS, then saw he's a rym user himself lol, left a cute thank you note on his own page for ppl listening to his music

thought no brainer to approach for interview and he was super happy to do it, chatted for 4 hours and now we're pals pretty much. still chatting w him and he's already invited me onto his NTS to do my own mix, but I'm not quite ready for that platform yet.

honestly didn't know before the interview how much of an OG he is in the Chinese club / underground experimental scene. met a lot of Chinese diaspora artist now who've known him for 10+ years. so funny how I barely cared about China in 2022 also lol
