Jonah Hill would’ve been GOAT as Howie (especially if he wore the kippah, it’d suit him). But glad Sandler got in in the end, allowed us to see a side of him so many can’t. Amazing talent, bless him.

The most praise I’ve seen for this is coming from people who watch a ton of film. General audiences as well as a lotta those hypebeast critics were the ones hating the hardest on it so I’d say this is a movie for film heads

word? it’s the opposite for me lol. the only people i know personally who were hyping it are the type to ask me for some recs to help them get into film then not watch any of them but rave to me about how great The Lighthouse was what else makes you say it’s one for film heads?

not like i disliked it, i totally enjoyed the movie. just feels very understated and lowkey, weird that it would get so much attention.

Well, going off cinemascore and rotten tomatoes user ratings, I assume that represents people who typically dont watch much film and both really didnt like this movie lol.

Although, yeah I am sure there is overlap between people who loved The Lighthouse and this but from critics who be watching a ton of obscure s*** like at Slant Magazine or Reverse Shot or something, most of them heavily praised this film while saying something like the lighthouse was just fine.

Personally, I loved the chaotic drama the Safdies are able to stir up every second. Even in just like a normal conversation that is meant to give you a backdrop, the safdies do it in such a disorienting way where everyone is just talking over each other that it at once looks naturalistic and intense. I also think it is extremely risky for them to cast Sandler and then go even more off the deep end on their stylistic tendencies.

I'm a massive film head and my father is not and he loved this about as much as I did.

I think a bigger issue here is that Sandler brings prior expectations to lots of viewers. People who don't know what to expect are going in expecting an Adam Sandler movie and are getting a Safdie Brothers movie.

I know for sure a big thing was that this movie was getting a ton of promo through the NBA on TNT and ESPN and all that. So a lot of people likely went in because they were basketball fans and liked Sandler and expected a comedy or something.

Lots of those "mainstream reviews" on Amazon and RT were also people expecting an Adam Sandler comedy. I don't think this has failed the mainstream, I think it's pretty widely loved by the people who see it. This issue is what people go into it expecting it to be.

Like how some people didn't like Logan because they expected it to be an X-Men movie.

    Just rewatched this on Blu-ray

Crazy how some scenes flies over you mf you keep picking up on rewatches

Like by second rewatch I figured it was about him missing his life away with family for gambling

And then now I’ve noticed like even when Howie has to watch his kid to sleep he’s not with him he just looking at the match on his phone

Also anyone know where can I cop the black jacket Howie rocks during his last scene? looks flames

The whole movie was about him being selfish and addicted. I thought it was a bit too long.

I would say the movie itself and story is overrated but it gets kinda overshadowed because of A. Sandler.

Adam Sandler was amazing and really painful to watch sometimes but I mean that in a good way because he played that so well.

Jonah doesn’t have the juice to pull off any of the scenes.

I don’t know how you can watch the ads and think it was a comedy. Every single one of the TV spots was very intense.
