I’m just saying the sales argument makes no sense because Kendrick isn’t offering a work that’s meant to be consumed for sales. He’s not making playlist and head banging s***.
And sure you can call it pretentious for him to not participate in that trend and instead want to make something else. But it is what it is, not better or worse.
Tons of artists don’t do that. Sales would only work as that metric if every artist was on the same playing field and working for the same goal

even if you dont make an album full of bangers or easy hits you want to make an album that has replay value no?
im not saying it doesn't have replay value it just feels like for most consumers it didnt
“Replay value” in itself is not a metric of quality. It’s just how pop-oriented / trend-oriented an artist wants to make their stuff so it sticks
Doing that or not doing that has nothing to do with the actual quality. It has to do with your own tastes as a listener
