Major takeaways
The problem with blindly advocating Cancel Culture is that the internet isn’t always right and that not all crimes have the same severity. It takes only a few hours for internet users to organise mass mobilisations against allegations and accusations. Countless vigilantes descend upon the targeted profiles, decrying everything the offender has ever done. In those vicious echo-chambers, nobody stops to verify the claims or to ponder over the philosophical implications of their actions. They are out for blood.
It is fine if someone does not want to watch or read a piece of work because they do not agree with the expressed views but attempting to prevent others from doing the same is nothing less than authoritarian censorship and it should be condemned as such.
Sweeping declarations calling for censorship or furious responses in defence of rapists will no longer work, they will only contribute to the extremely divisive nature of social media platforms.
KTT, please tell me.
Is it OK to expect artists to be paragons of morality?
Cancel culture really isnt a big a thing as people like to think it is
Which artists/actors have (unjustly) actually lost their career due to being "cancelled"?

I dont agree at all. This is becoming more prominent as fans continue to engage more on Social media with artists.
Octavian was one of the best new upcomers of 2020 and had his whole album rollout (and basically career) ruined because of a sexual assault allegation.
I'm not defending him in any way, I'm just objectively saying, his whole s*** was ruined in basically 24 hours after that allegation.
Happened to plenty of other artists too in recent months like Medhane.

The fact that i even have to type "I'm not defending him in any way" so KTT warriors dont attack me

Kevin Spacey
ppl having a huge problem with having the balance between being sensitive and careless lol
R. Kelly
/thread
This. How can you look at what R Kelly did and think the art should be separate from the artist
There are prolly some exceptions doe
Cancel Culture is wrong in the sense that it encourages ostracizing people without any sort of nuance.
It's also wrong in the sense that alot of the times, mostly in music but ESPECIALLY in hip hop, it's based on how we feel about that artist. There's a lot of people who do f***ed up things and get "canceled" then those that do equally f***ed up things and get passes.
The problem with cancel culture has more to do with the people who are supposedly doing the canceling imo
bro i dont care about cancel culture
if your music is good then fine i listen them
music is trash then their is more reason to hate them

though if their guilty they should be phased out of the industry 100%
too many people in the industry get away with f***ed up things and they never get punished
look at dr luke still has career and no1 hit to boot this year alone

I guarantee you fw a movie where an a****** celeb/actor was involved in domestic abuse at some point in their life.
Do we do background checks on every piece of art we consume?

To what extent should they be phased out?
Is it on us to forcibly censor and stop Dr Luke from getting in the studio again?
Im all for seperating it but i dont listen to artists that did some really bad s*** like rape tbh

just because his famous producer doesn't mean he should get at pass. This though doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't listen to his production on older songs though. Maybe a warning would be nice for people which might not be aware of his actions
if he was a nobody he would be in jail
people should have choice if they wanna support a abuser music though but personally i won't be listening to r kelly any time soon due to his actions nor i want him to ever make music again
This exactly what im talkin bout lol.

Why are you filing assault/sexual assault under "cancel culture"
