If they say stupid s*** (Kanye and Wayne) I can disagree and move on.

If they do some f*** s*** that is unacceptable and disgusting (R Kelly, Cosby, Tory, Kevin Spacey, etc) then you don’t deserve to have a career.

Truly as simple as that. People really act like there's no difference

That's the argument of the article. This type of hysteria response from social media results in the conflation of these things. It's inevitable and will only get worse.

Yea Twitter and cancel culture make me sick but it also depends on the severity.

Like if it comes out that someone’s a pedophile, they rightfully should lose everything.

But, for a recent example, s*** like Doja Cat was ridiculous to me. Cause even if she is self racist, that obviously stems from major insecurity and she already dealing wit her own s***, plus if anybody can talk s*** about a race, it’s someone who belongs to that race. S*** really wasn’t that big of a deal, but mfs tried to end her jus as bad as they would if she was a pedo or something that actually mattered.

I just wanna say that "separating art from the artist" does not make you as intelligent as many of you love to think. Truthfully, nobody really cares that you still listen to and enjoy music from garbage human beings.

The whole point of not listening to an artist who has done dirt has nothing to do with separating the art from them. It's moreso not allowing them to continue making money off of their work that will likely go towards them continuing to do weirdo s***.

That's the biggest reason why it was a big deal for people to stop listening to R Kelly back when he first got caught up with his s***. Unfortunately people did not stop listening to him, he still kept making money, and he continued to be a sexual offender/predator.

If you are separating the art from the artist, congratulations. Would you like a f***ing cookie? There are people who still listen to GG Allin and he was a self-proclaimed and proud racist piece of s***, and he made it a point to announce that within his music and his actions. People are aware and they're not afraid to admit it when people say they're weird for listening to his music still. They don't argue it either, and they don't go hard defending listening to the music unlike many of you.

By all means, continue to listen to those artists, but don't get mad or write whole damn pseudo-intellectual diatribes defending you listening to them when people call you a f***in weirdo for doing so. Quit being b****made and listen to who you want, but please keep in mind, nobody cares. Also nobody wants to hear you praising the music of, and caping for a pedophile who would often seek inspiration for his music by preying on teenagers. Because whether y'all like it or not, some art is very much apart of who the artist is.

Kellz doesn’t own any of his music so whether you listen or not it doesn’t really make a big deal to him

If you going to his shows or tours then okay but how many people were doing that?

And there’s no counter argument for the picking and choosing. No matter what you are listening to music by garbage human beings. It isn’t gonna make sense to most people when you draw arbitrary lines and then act like you did a good thing by supporting one garbage person and not another

Which artists/actors have (unjustly) actually lost their career due to being "cancelled"?

Hot take, but I’m just realizing that typically the same people who believe in rigid cancelling of a person also hold the belief that we need prison reform and a rehabilitative approach is the better way. I can’t help but think that these are opposing beliefs. We can’t simply discard people. There’s room for nuance in all of this. Some people deserve to truly be locked away from society permanently and some people truly deserve to be stripped of their privileges. The vast majority in both cases do not exist at those extremes.

A lot of people were still going to R Kelly shows that's what the problem was. I believe dude even had a residency in Vegas for a bit and most of those shows were sold out. Think that was a couple months before the stories of him having a s***cult started to leak out. Definitely see where he was putting the money he was getting from tours towards.

Listening to the music, whether an artist owns it or not, is still helping them because they're eventually gonna tour the music as the interest is clearly still there.

Yeah they picked a bad exemple. The cancelling doesn’t work for movies but it works for universities where students successfully prevent writers from coming on campus for debates cause they don’t like their ideas.

This isn’t a good example either because no one considers debates with college students to be meaningful whatsoever. Not only that, most of the time it’s just student orgs in these colleges “disinviting” people, but they don’t have any actual say in whether they show up or not
