From those that played both, how do they compare?
SMT games are more challenging and somewhat more straightforward as a JRPG than Persona with its life simulator elements.
SMT places a far greater importance on buffs and debuffs than any other RPG series

SMT games are focused entirely on the dungeon-crawling RPG gameplay, while Persona games are split between the social stuff and dungeons (dungeons are shorter and easier in Persona).
there's not nearly as much narrative in SMT as there is in Persona, but that might switch up in SMTV. the setting and themes are also totally different.

gameplay for mainline smt is a lot more satisfying imo
the press turn system is probably the biggest difference between them as far as battles go

SMT is the main series. Persona is the spinoff series but ended up catching more popularity mainly because of the social aspects and people love the weeb s***. Its also lighter in tone compared to SMT which says a lot since Persona is dark itself. With that being said I love both series. Persona was my intro to SMT with Persona 3. But Nocturne takes the cake for me. That game is perfect. I'd say the main differences is difficulty, SMT being more focused on the gameplay aspects and no social aspects where Persona has that duality. SMT games are Chaos vs law vs neutrual. You're basically playing the game and deciding if you side with God, Lucifer, or against both. If you love difficulty and want darker story SMT is for you.

Difficulty is an understatement too lol. When you first start Nocturne there are a lot of noob blockers to separate the weak from the determined. It’s actually a standard with SMT games to throw in some super rough s*** at the beginning to discourage you lol. In Nocturne it only gets much worse in the late game. This game is the epitome of bullshit but that’s what makes it so good here’s an example of one of the later fights lol.

The only thing I could complain about in this game is the random encounter rate is hell, but I’m assuming they fixed it. This game is perfect from characters to story to soundtrack on god the f***ing soundtrack ughhhhhhhh it’s so good
