thought the dungeons were awful. i couldn't stand the warps/puzzles and they were made even worse with the very frequent encounters. other than that, very very good game. those things definitely dropped it by a point or two though. was losing my mind lol.

i've only really played 3, 4, 4a, 5, SJR, and some of DDS

My exact same problems, if the game didnt give you that utility Pisaca, s*** would be even worse

The encounter rate is even worse in DDS tho, the biggest problem in the game by far

seems like older games in general are just super unbearable with encounter rates. played through final fantasy 1 & 3 a few months back, and holy hell, you get encounters every other step.

i gotta get around to finishing up DDS (and playing DDS2). already have a cheat installed that halves the encounter rate and doubles the xp

Of the ones i completed it, has to be Soul Hackers, its a cool game but it feels so outdated compared to the new smts, specially after having played Strange Journey, because that is the most "modern" dungeon crawler as of now in smt and has so much qol that makes it a lot more bereable. One good point tho is that SH is short and sweet, it doesnt overstay its welcome

Finally beat SMT IV, went with the Chaos Ending. Really good game, gonna have to try out Apocalypse at some point

Yeah, was gonna say, wouldn't put too much stock into what Famitsu says with their reviews. That being said, all the previews that came out a couple weeks back had some really positive things to say, so I'm sure the game is good.

Not surprised at all. From the reveal trailer the game looked way more digestible for people than SMT V just with aesthetics alone lol.
