This is for Jpegmafia, death grips, Danny brown, and others who fit in this category
These guys are hyped as doing something different musically
my question is why are their lyrics just about s***drugs violence and memes like everything else today? The lyrics don’t stand apart from the mainstream at all
It used to be if you made experimental music you might have something unique to say too (dr octagon, deltron 3030, clouddead, etc)
But have we been dumbed down so much that even our more experimental artists have nothing to say beyond “I f*** your b**** I do the d**** Im on the internet f*** you!” I’d rather get that from future than some Reddit nerd pretending it’s deep
Thoughts?
Just because you don't like some 'experimental' rappers or you didn't like a particular project from two of em doesn't mean you can group a bunch of them together on some oh yeah, there's nothing in their lyrics
Ride's pen is insane
Danny's too
Jpeg can really write too but I can understand more with him why you might have some issues with his lyrics
Everyone you named besides peggy do be having wild quirky lyrics tho.
But peggy also makes up for that in a wild soundscape with some of the craziest production we have rn.
I think @op critique should be more suited for alot of the “new” lofi/griselda affiliated rappers that are REALLY not that exceptional like…at all.
Plenty of great 'experimental' rappers with fantastic lyrics. You've just cherry-picked 3 - and even their case it's not necessarily true.

Put me on
I don’t think clouddead is a great example of “better lyrics” tbh, that’s probably the absolute worst thing about them
MIKE
A GOAT, but tbf his sound isn’t as experimental as these other guys
Put me on
billy woods, ELUCID, Quelle Chris, Serengeti, MIKE, Mach-Hommy, Denmark Vessey, Amani, etc.

Imo the abstract writing perfectly fits their sound and I’d rather jpeg be on some “the ram’s crumpled horn, an empty turtle shell, sunset is an all day process” stuff. That’s better than meme raps for me

Facts I love these guys and the whole scene but their sound is slightly more conservative even in its experimentation… Quelle Chris is probably the best example

I mean if you're only putting Danny Brown in this conversation because of the new joint then maybe? even then not to a significant extent imo..
But there's no way Armand Hammer's stuff for instance pales in any sense 'experimentally' to anything Danny's made prior.
Same goes for Serengeti, go listen to Ajai II, if that's not experimental I don't know what is.
The production on Amani's debut album is crazy too and his writing is brilliant.

Those three actually had some of the finest verses, Peggy might be an edgelord and going too far but it doesn't write badly

Ok you might be spitting ill go back and check some of that stuff. I guess itt I was talking about a specific type of “experimental rapper” that yells about hedonism on noisy beats but I see your point that there are some good lyricists out there who experiment

I can respect the preference
Experimental rap bores me if it’s just a classification for “raps without tropes” where you can’t be braggadocious or hedonistic for fear of violating the artifice, or a genre trap where artists have to take up an absurd concept or character to qualify as experimental
