I can respect the preference
Experimental rap bores me if it’s just a classification for “raps without tropes” where you can’t be braggadocious or hedonistic for fear of violating the artifice, or a genre trap where artists have to take up an absurd concept or character to qualify as experimental
That’s a really fair point I’m not saying that artists should self consciously avoid stuff like that, and not saying that anyone doesn’t qualify as experimental. But I just tend to feel “heightened” music with mundane predictable lyrics leaves something to be desired for me
im cool with underground rappers not having profound lyrics because dudes may end up being anticon-tier rappers where you just cant be f***ed getting into it
I agree tho jpegmafia's schtick got old fast
Another good point, yeah that would be the other extreme
But I’d still rather hear Doseone on these Jpeg beats than jpeg
I was just saying this to my homeboy
Experimental/Underground rappers be scammers man lol. They market themselves as different in order to stand out and people who like an underdog gravitate towards them but in actuality they aren’t as talented as the a-list rappers.
Well known a-list rappers (Jay, Nas, Wayne, Drake, Kendrick, etc) are a-list for a reason. They are exceptionally gifted at rapping and have mastered the art beyond what most people are capable of. Experimental artist be in a constant state of experimentation never fully committing to a sound and mastering it on the level of A-listers
Ride at least pre-The Powers That B at the barest of minimums had an absolutely fantastic pen
Danny Brown was literally one of the best rappers as a whole package in the entire 2010s
op is just trying to out-hipster the hipsters, s*** is cringe asf
Everyone you named besides peggy do be having wild quirky lyrics tho.
But peggy also makes up for that in a wild soundscape with some of the craziest production we have rn.
I think @op critique should be more suited for alot of the “new” lofi/griselda affiliated rappers that are REALLY not that exceptional like…at all.
now this is a conversation that should be actually held, but i got crucified last time i brought it up
those griselda niggas don’t be putting no sorts of effort nor substance into their lyrics (save Conway and maybe Benny occasionally) and yet they’re praised like they’re geniuses or some sort of prophets reviving hip hop
they are literally carried by their aesthetic and production, the music isn’t bad but if we wanna sit here and talk about lyrics i can go all day
Plus, I groan and roll my eyes at au courant meme references as much as the next listener but ultimately that s*** is good because alluding to pop culture in raps is a treasured thing that brings a lot of joy to weirdos like myself. Jpegmafia referencing Go To H**** Jail is as healthy as Eazy E interpolating the theme song to Green Acres in a song about rawdog nutting
You had to go back pretty far for a jpeg one
Word, one of three and the one I gave you some concessions on
But that's also a whole album
But yeah the fact that I could just link all of those off top without even really thinking got me thinking that you just wanted to get this one off after not f***ing with the jpeg x Danny project and that's fine
Or maybe you just don't really like these dude's music and that's fine too
You had to go back pretty far for a jpeg one
He's doing too much lean and other d****, lyrics have gotten progressively worse
how can ANYBODY say this about Danny Brown? you clearly sound ignorant af rn

its a huge generalization but I see your point in how most non-mainstream and actually underground rappers wouldn't be able to touch Nas, not just off of the lyrics but also delivery, how they carry themselves, etc.. but I'd say its moreso the fact that Nas is so great, and also maybe not every underground rapper should strive for it bc they got their own competition
them senile retirement home escapee Griselda niggas been rapping about coke and opps over the finest loops imaginable and they get praise for it
when underground or “experimental” artists do it though it’s a problem
lmao give me a f***ing break

Yeah tbh I am talking more about recently/this new tape than back catalog. Cause I feel this problem is getting worse post pandemic and all content is being dumbed down

I have the same energy for Griselda tbh
The thing is they’re rapping over regressive beats so at least it fits
Idk why jpeg be hearing his unique ass beats and is like “yeah let me just rap super generic on this”
but yeah Danny Brown is straight one of the greatest rap writers of the last decade like how's he even on that list. and don't get it twisted, making an album sounding as simple as youknowhatimsayin is a tremendous task and you have to be a sick writer to do that right

Word
That's an entirely different conversation than what you presented
and even though it's something I disagree with a much more interesting discussion

Yeah I may have been able to frame it better by specifying that I’m taking about very recently

Ok y’all are right about Danny but he’s guilty by association now

no it doesn’t man
if i hear an old hard ass boom bap beat im expecting lyrical excellence, not fashion talk and coke raps
