  • Like another poster said 10k wouldn’t really be enough to move the needle in terms of changing my lifestyle. And an 80 mile total commute sounds like hell, I’d be willing to bet after a month you would start regretting it in one way shape or form. I wouldn’t be so quick to jump at this

i would not. you're going to be paying an arm and a leg for gas to begin with + you're depreciating the car and god forbid any major issues pop up with it.

on top of that you're sacrificing like 10 hours a week to sit in a car.

take this from someone who did a 40+ mile commute every day for a little less than 2 years. it's not worth it for just 10k more.

I’m WFH rn but when I go to office I’ll be 40 miles away so 80 mile round trip. I’m in jersey tho and it’s all highways so it’s barely a 40 minute drive.

It’s not that uncommon here but not sure about where u are and traffic etc. the pay increase for sure shouldn’t be your main influencer but rather how much better of an opportunity it is to further your career etc.

Yes this drive will also be 80 miles round trip...

Hmm most of y'all saying no got me guessing now 😭😭😭

Only if you're going to move closer. Imagine willingly adding 76 miles a day to your commute for 10k do you not value your life!!!

should i take this job that pays 10k more a year but the commute would be 80 miles total a day

right now i work hybrid and when i do go into the office at my current job its literally down the street like 4 miles away.

the new job would make me more productive and i wouldnt feel as stagnant as it is more focused on IT instead of office admin HR work

    im in california btw
    i drive a 2017 mazda 3

UPDATE: I looked at address of office and it would only be 62 miles round trip now

they sonnin you, if you cant move closer to the city that the job is in and make 3x rent they tryin to son you

  • Oct 7, 2021

yea if i'm gonna switch jobs to commute 80 miles per day i'd need at least a $40k raise, unless i was desperate to leave my job lol

I left my job which was about a 10 mile commute for a ~$12k raise job which is a 70 mile commute. The salary was a wash given the travel but the opportunity and potential to relocate is what really pushed me over

Damn did you end up net negative even with the raise??

Or you barely felt it due to the commute??

  • Oct 7, 2021

Just did the distance in my area, and breh. That's far as f*** my man. It'll take a toll on you after a while. You thought about moving around the area if you do decide to take the job?

Overall it’s a positive, but obviously won’t be maximized until I move. My vehicle does decent on gas, I WFH once a week and I’m off every other Friday so those days not traveling add up after awhile

    10k more a year is

    $830 more a month

$415 extra on your check before tax assuming you get paid every two weeks . is $200 a week worth the 40 mile drive each way? youre gonna have to be pumping gas more frequently too. not to mention driving that much every day is physically draining

Yea I’m not saying no like others. It’s a very common commute especially in my state. I just think the reason shouldn’t be the pay since it’s not that substantial of an increase

im in the LA - south bay area...

the drive would be to the more south part of orange county...

damn i just dont wanna stay at my current job anymore lol
but i wonder how bad the 80 miles is gonna be..

tbh i drive a lot i do doordash a lot too, but i definitely am not gonna do that a lot less if i go for the new job

I drive from Buena Park to Newport Beach only 18 miles but takes me like 40 mins each way to get there and back. Sometimes longer going back like an hour

not for the money. 10k is what, 6-7 after tax? hardly going to move the needle on your lifestyle whereas an extra hour or two commuting definitely will

opportunity/progression is another matter but doesnt sound like the value in the tradeoff is there i.e. your life will be worse off all things considered

    listen to the chips op

If you do decide to take the job & do the commute, please update the OP in 6 months with your experience so this thread can be shown to the next person asking this question

    new update....

its would only be 62 miles round trip
or 31 miles to it and 31 miles back home...

does this make it make it sound more enticing now and a surefire yes?

Mileage isn't as much of an issue as is commute time imo. Have you mapped it during rush hour times?
