yeah this album with its Got Milk ass font was bad but not intentionally so. Wolf just hated the psychedelic direction Chess wedged him into.

Mar 18·1 replyElriclate 60s stuff like Nashville Skyline and especially Self Portrait (which was actually bad) were him saying; "I dont want to be your generational spokesperson, stop taking me so seriously" at a time when left wing terrorist groups were naming themselves after his lyrics and people were digging through his trash for a literal shred of evidence that he was their saviour, stalking his family and s***.
He also tried back in '65 with things like Maggies Farm and Its All Over Now Baby Blue but the music was still so good nobody listened.

Mar 18I remember when people were s***ting on Morale constantly and now I open this thread and it’s mostly high praise
Give it 2-3 years and people gonna be praising GNX highly as well.
He’s an album artist and it’s always been one of his strongest suits.

it makes me look at self portrait in a different lightthe '65 songs weren't written to be s***ty lol just to say he wasnt gonna be anybody's pawn nor a spokesperson for the folk world that just wanted acoustic topical protest songs out of him etc.
It wasnt till the later 60s he realized the point of those songs was either lost or ignored on his stans and figured making outright bad music was the only way to kill his aura.
another self portrait is interesting but I cant say I found any real gems on there
