I prefer DAMN over GKMC tbh, the production is more varied and I prefer his raps on there.

Perfect balance between mainstream and conscious rap.

DAMN having GOD on there automatically disqualifies it for me. That song is actual ass. On a more serious note, GKMC has so many great moments on it and I prefer the production. His delivery on DAMN is more varied and interesting however.

I actually like that song lol, I’d get why some wouldn’t though. Never been huge on west coast hip hop which is probably why it’s not one of my favs by him but Kenny can do no wrong.

You mean the Graduation, Paper Trail, C3 route? Yes if executed perfectly

Sort of but I feel like these albums were less exaggerated switch in sound compared to the ones in op. I mean ye was already pop before grad same with wayne and ti to an extent

Yea it’s a perfect example of how a lyricist can go commercial in this era

To me it was but it dropped out of that. Make it easy tho

  • There has to be a balance of lyricism/substance with accessibility without it being corny or forced.

    Nope

It only worked for Kendrick bc he’s been perfecting that style for awhile now

Niggas forget that he had songs like I Do This, Michael Jordan, and Spiteful Chant back in the day. It all came together on DAMN

A lot of “lyrical” rappers cover one lane and it seems contrived whenever they try other styles. Kendrick can switch his sound naturally. That’s always been the difference between him and other backpack rappers

  • A lot of lyrical rappers music today just don't have the balance that kendrick music has....or even J.Cole....It's hard to do....

rappers like Boogie and J.I.D. are cool but their music doesn't have appeal on the level of a Kendrick...

  • Please for f***s sake no

If those albums are examples of artists going the “damn route” ima say no and they shouldn’t have even looked at that route as an option

That's real like absoul said the kendrick on damn was just k.dot kendrick.

    Lol nah fr

  • Jan 7, 2020

    Considering damn is mediocre, no

  • Jan 7, 2020

Also the only people to make a significant increase in sales from this route was kendrick and jay rock. Big Krit sales decrease from his last project so did Cole's. And q and joey only increase their sales by 1-4k

    So it's barely even working
