watched Portrait Of A Lady On Fire so I can credibly come back and say
What did you dislike
Rewatched Cleo 5 to 7 earlier tonight. The sculpture modeling scene with her friend hit me a lot harder after seeing how well it complimented Cleo’s (false/exaggerated) perception of everyone staring at her. She displaces her fears onto the eyes of strangers as a way to exteriorize the self-criticisms that, in a cruel way, go on to define her lack of direction. Reading fate in cards is brief solace from the existential anxiety eating away at her. While there is much to be pessimistic about, the movie still has its charms. And it is worth it to see the smiling actress, whose surface shields much tension. The movie has lots to say about celebrity as well as ordinary people’s disappointment with being average/forgotten by the universe

Somber. The whole film is covered in a blue velvet of tension.
Beautifully shot.

Had to bless myself with one of the top 30 films of all time sorry
L
I know they don't have the same french, queer, feminist trifecta that makes critics weak (with a touch of abortion rights) but if they had to slam something new and directed by a woman into top 30 of all f***in time I wish it were Zama or Happy As Lazarro which felt like actual magical experiences.
I told my gf the situation and she was fully ready to s*** on me for being a chauvinistic film nerd but she was bored as f*** within the first hour and went to bake Christmas cookies thought it was just as weird as me after I told her which films got bounced for it.
Sorry for sounding like Mr Yeezy

Noémie Merlant & Adèle Haenel deliver two of the best performances of the century
also you know boring is a mid critique in these parts
Did you not care at all about the tension of painting a woman who has been consigned to a slow death by way of matrimony? I thought it was beautifully tragic

I didn't say it was boring she did
It was really good but man top 30?!

As to the question, if anything from the last decade is getting ranked top 30, and I think something should, that one is deserving imo. Maybe our difference is not agreeing that a recent movie can be appropriately ranked higher?

You threw the same hypothetical at me when I said Jeanne Dielman was way too long and slow and challenging to be #1 in an art form as accessable to all humanity as cinema and i told you then I would have the same complaint if Stalker got #1 and that I'm always telling people to avoid it until they're acclimated.
Same here, I told Jonboi to pump his breaks several times when he was going overboard claiming they should just slam The Master into the top 10 and get it over with. I understand it's more of a personal thing.
And I already posited two other great new films directed by women I'd rather see up there in my first post too? Zama and Happy as Lazarro

tbh I found Zama boring when I first watched but it’s one I need to revisit.
For what it’s worth, I guarantee that selection would produce even more headscratching but nonetheless, maybe I will rewatch after watching The Swamp by her!

There are tons of movies I’d put over it, like Shoplifters

Saving Private Ryan definitely shouldn’t be that high but it has some good choices

there are enough crossovers I have to wonder if this list was inspired by the BFI (with a healthy dose of populism tossed in)

Gone With the Wind (1939) and The Piano (1993) are the only things in this top 50 I haven't seen. Not sure that's going to change anytime for GWTW, but I'll try to do Piano before the year is up

Bridesmaids in the top 100 of all time?
noticed Portrait of a Lady on Fire actually had a scene that was a borderline homage to Bridesmaids

Really? I can’t recall. I only seen bridesmaids once

I’m not massively offended by this though it seems to try & cover all bases
