A24 doesn’t even have enough money to market most of their films lmao
Just to be clear I don't think it should win, just thinking about the last few winners there's been, EE fits the bill and checks a lot of the same boxes
Also what do you mean, you have to market a film to the academy to be nominated? Cooked if so
But isn't EE their most commercially successful film to date? Feel like marketing it shouldn't be a problem

You spend a lot of money in other ways that aren’t quite bribes.

Europe and Asia, one of the few transcontinental countries
Word…I was in Ankara so I’m not sure what continent that falls in
Technically no? Cus Turkey is part Europe right
just the small part ”thrace” counts as europe, which is separated by the bosphorus
Finished Shoah last night. Thinking about starting Tie Xi Qu sometime this month. Catch me in ten years when my ballot is exclusively 4hr+ features

@rowjaystan this man needs guidance
oh yeah, for everyone confused, this should be in the OP
Incredible bait, but I do think it's interesting that this emphasises innovation so much, really drives home that as novelty and influence are basically the only agreed-upon objective measures in contemporary criticism, critics often view works through this lens of innovation to deem whether they were successful as opposed to meeting them on their own terms
I don't think the idea of 'objectively good and bad' art is useful at all btw or accurate, but there's still a need for something critics can point to in the pursuit of their judgement of a work being objecticely correct
Is the first rule of Wang Bing fanclub that you don't talk about Wang Bing?

Do you subscribe to this idea? I think it’s too extreme, but has more validity than some would like to believe. I guess that’s just my way of supporting a healthy relationship between artists and critics (especially criticism / film writing divorced from ratings)
Sherlock Jr. is one of the funniest old as f*** movies I’ve seen, and it has some really cool editing tricks. Feels like one of the better introductions to 20s cinema for the uninitiated

nah not really it's just scaruffi's schizoposting

Final act of Steamboat is insane, Buster could have died irl 101 different ways during that

Going from Shoa and Wang Bing to Sherlock Jr must have been refreshing to go from literally the longest opus to the shortest.
I've recommended it to countless people as a great intro to silent films
