It's not about how the music is being made or what the influence/direction of the music rather It's who is making that music. I believe that the quality of mainstream music is so low because many of the artists are not genuinely artistic or creative. A label can find a good looking model, put him/her in a studio with the best writers and producers and still get a lack luster product but it will still sell cuz of the marketing and budget involved until it eventually flops
