Americans really just are genocidal freaks who want to see blood for the faults of the governments that people live under:

    vox.com/future-perfect/2019/6/26/18750566/nuclear-war-polling-americans-support-civilian-deaths

"When the number of expected North Korean fatalities increased from 15,000 5,000 civilians and 10,000 military to 1.1 million, preference for using nuclear weapons among respondents who favor the death penalty increased from 38 percent to 49 percent (although this is not a statistically significant change)," the report says. "One respondent who supported the death penalty and the US nuclear strike in this scenario explained, 'It's our best chance of eliminating the North Koreans.' "

Another participant explained their answer by writing "to end North Korea."

That suggests it's not just that voters are indifferent to casualties - some of them want to annihilate entire "enemy" civilian populations and are more supportive of a war if it seems likely to achieve that end."

    As for Marx: marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1844/manuscripts/labour.htm

    marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1857/grundrisse/ch16.htm#p831

As for others: Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord

    And Ernest Mandel's essay marxists.org/archive/mandel/19xx/xx/alien.htm

I'd read the Mandel essay first

I would argue that Marx even in capital believed in the theory of alienation

Alienation - commodity fetishism - reification (making something into an object) are all interconnected phenomena

Mandel writes: "The fact that the modern wage earner owns none of the products of his own labour, obvious as it may appear to people who are accustomed to bourgeois society, is not at all so self-evident from the viewpoint of human history as a whole. It was not like that for thousands upon thousands of years of human existence. Both the medieval handicraftsman and the handicraftsman of antiquity were the proprietors of their own products. The peasant, and even the serf of the middle ages, remained in possession of at least 50 per cent, sometimes 60 and 70 per cent, of the output of their own labour."
