Taiwanese haven't been "propagandized" into having an identity lmao theres always been a local identity like in any multicultural empire. Mandarin Chinese wasn't even the main language until the KMT started its sinicization campaign during martial law. If anything the propaganda campaign of the KMT was to emphasize its connection to mainland China and suppress local culture.

Being made into a seperate state from the PRC, being dominated by a mainlander minority during martial law, and PRC hostility since the 90s is what produced the Taiwanese nationalism that you see today. Not "being propagandized by the US".

87% of Taiwanese lived there before the KMT showed up. The KMT is not even pro-independence it wants to preserve the status quo which is why the CPC along with Taiwanese business elites support it.

Sure majority of Taiwanese didn't see primarily see themselves as Taiwanese 20 years ago, they saw themselves as Taiwanese Chinese. But today it's only gone down and the vast majority of them see themselves as Taiwanese, so why does it matter?

Like every nationalist Taiwanese nationalists play up their separation and individuality but

1. That's not a KMT project, it's a DPP project. Your narrative that its just the losers of the Civil wars being salty doesn't make sense. They're a CPC favored minority and letting the majority into government has only eroded their power.
2. Going the other direction and claiming there is no Taiwanese identity is equally false.
3. That branch hasn't even been supported by the US until recently.

Tying the pro independence movement to Japanese colonial collaborators would at least have a basis if you're trying to discredit them.
