You're trying to tie the anti-mainland beat of today with the anti-mainland of the Cold war don't play dumb my guy

Obviously they're connected lol it's not like DPPs stance is like "we're against PRC, but they were good during the cold war"

Yeah but the DPP aren't the losers of the Chinese civil war like he was saying. There is no continuity. Like I said it would make more sense to tie them to Japanese colonial collaborators which is when the notion of autonomy came up in Taiwan

Who said DPP lost the civil war lol? The founding of the ROC was done by people who lost the civil war

Anti-mainland sentiment has been propagated bu different parties throughout history to such an extent that it has become very widespread

It's not like the people who established the DPP have more of a connection to Japanese collaborators than KMT

@cloud_rap is saying issue in Taiwan is just the losers of the Civil war being salty. The KMT lost civil war then founded the ROC, the DPP wasn't even a thing in the 80s. The DPP arent the people who lost the civil war is my point. There is a difference between being anti mainland and wanting to conquer or remain part of it (KMT) and being anti mainland and wanting to move towards independence like the DPP.

Its obvious that they went to but can't cause China would just swoop in. It's like Zelenskyy flip flopping on NATO.

KMT and DPP differ on the 1992 consensus and KMT is more open to unification, but KMT doesn't want to conquer mainland China and DPP doesn't want formal independence, both parties know it's unrealistic and that such rhetoric is just useful for votes lol

And yeah the issue of modern day Taiwan, as in the establishment of the ROC, is the direct consequence of KMT losing the civil war, that's just a historical fact and little interpretation is needed for that

It's not inherently unrealistic, just dangerous given the current situation, which they're working to change.

Ironically that's a subjective interpretation of the issue of Taiwan today which is unification

There's not going to be a change in making Taiwanese independence more realistic that doesn't involve US military involvement

There's nothing rly subjective about that lol, the current standoff between ROC and PRC has its origin in the civil war which the KMT lost, I didn't say anything about unification there

Crine it's 100% subjective to say the issue in Taiwan today is just the establishment of the ROC. The issue is whether the ROC continues being its own thing or integrates further with China, thats whats the standoff is about. Relations have actually gone up and down since the civil war, and we won't know what the outcome of the standoff means for the ROC as an entity until its resolved. Saying it has its origins in the civil war is another thing.

I know you're saying the ROC is an outcome of the civil war, but what it means for unification is interpretation.

I'm not saying it's a good thing, I'm acknowledging that the DPP is doing it which I'm under the impression you're dismissing

I never said DPP isn't courting the US tho that's public knowledge, it's just not nearly to the extent to where formal independence is in the cards

But that's only if you take a short term perspective. It's like saying Japan wasn't trynna ditch silk because they were still subsidizing it in the 50s

Yeah I'm talking about the short term lol

And even on the long term, the extent to which military support would have to increase to China for formal independence to be an option is still unlikely, they already get tons of military aid
