based.
Important election for Peru and hopefully Castillo will come through on some his promises to eradicate corruption and foreign influences and raise the quality of life for all Peruvians. He's got some smart economic policies so it'll be very interesting to see what happens in his term
Don't start printing the guy's face on your t-shirts yet tho. He wants to reinstate the death penalty, militarize the youth, and censor the media. He's also against legalized abortion, gay marriage, and gender equality education.
publicly distanced himself from communism too

I know he has some shady policies / history w being anti communist but I didn't know all that. I thought I researched him well enough
You have any sources to read? Spanish/English is ok

She was the daughter of a right wing dictator put in by the US
Alberto Fujimori

Doing a quick dive on him and yeah he's sounds like an absolute monster. I suppose it's good for Peru that Castillo beat Fujimori's daughter in the election, but Castillo got some bad s*** going on with him too. I guess slow progress is good progress when a country has a whole lot of s*** to work on as whole.

last part talks about his social conservatism

good overview of him vs. fujimori

not sure I trust this source, but a really critical article about Castillo
I actually talked to a Peruvian-American coworker a bit about Castillo today and she said that Peru is kind of divided about him. He won largely because he's a political outsider (like Trump, Bolsonaro, and Macri) and the rural voters will finally be represented but the more urban voters, especially in Lima are a bit concerned with some of his policies
he's got some good ideas tho and he's much better than fujimori so let's see what happens

Hey since the first link is in spanish and i can’t really read that, i’m just curious if his social conservativism is relative to more socially progressive countries or he’s recognized for being socially conservative even among Peruvians. Hope i didn’t phrase that in a way that’s hard to understand

Taken from Kuczynski wikipedia -- president of peru from 2016 to 2020:
Almost immediately after winning the election, Kuczynski, despite previous public statements in support of social conservatism, appointed nearly all his ministers from the left (including many of Toledo's ex-ministers), and his government quickly became known for its promotion of feminism, abortion rights, and LGBT rights. This did not please the conservatives who had previously supported him, which led to the censure of two of his education ministers by the opposition-controlled congress, and a no-confidence vote for his entire cabinet in 2017.
Judging from the first article it could just be where Castillo grew up
says he grew up in one of the the poorest areas of Peru. Apparently they still grow the majority of their own food instead of buying it. He's a teacher in a city up north from there, so still pretty close. Pretty cool story, but I think rural areas tend to be a bit more socially conservative generalyl (? not sure) but looking forward to see what the homie who linked these articles think

yea the meaning of left/right varies by every country but Castillo is definitely socially conservative compared to progressive countries and even in Latin America he'd still qualify as socially conservative compared to a president like Fernández in Argentina. Similar to Bolivia, Peru is a socially conservative society largely thanks to centuries of Catholicism and it's mainly the younger generation that has become more socially progressive.
Castillo is from the Perú Libre party which does have some socialist leanings but he's been openly distancing himself from a lot of that so I don't think progressives in Peru are all that excited. He's a populist that's mainly promised to represent the rural communities, protect their interests, and offer some social plans to create more equality
but Castillo barely got to 50% which shows how divided the country is atm. From what I've read it seems like half the country feels forgotten and is sick of foreign influence, neoliberalism, and political corruption while the other half is fine with the status quo and fears a candidate like Castillo will nationalize all industries, tax the middle class, and follow in the footsteps of Chávez and Maduro
