Bird flu spreads to Southern California, infecting chickens, wild birds and other animals

Authorities describe the surge as “unprecedented” in scope, breadth and lethality.

In North America alone, an estimated 50 million birds have succumbed, which experts say is probably a vast undercount. And though government officials are primarily concerned about poultry farms, the epidemic has struck wild birds, too — from waterfowl to raptors and vultures.

In late August, one New Jersey park had to close its trails to hikers. There were too many dead vultures on the ground.

Elsewhere, other animals are getting infected and dying. In Maine, an elevated number of gray and harbor seal deaths have been attributed to the disease, while in Florida, officials believe a bottle-nosed dolphin succumbed to the virus. It’s also been detected in skunks and foxes.

Humans are not thought to be at risk for infection, but the fact the flu has spread to some mammals concerns some experts, given that humans are mammals.

the regulation that will occur in response to the emission/pollution bomb that's been exploding since the industrial revolution will be...dramatic

but like @MattM was saying we are like cockroaches. we will f***ing persist as long as possible.

but that same hubris of our tenacity will also be our downfall. it could happen in the coming decades, it could take as long as centuries, but unless some structures fundamentally change or we attain some galactic leap in terms of energy and emissions...shit look grim

and I say "it could happen" like it's some precise moment, it's not. it's already happening in places, for some people it's already all come crashing down

we saw how delicately balanced all our various global supply lines are. we know we're running into the upper limits of oil and gas. we know we don't have enough raw resources for a transition to electric energy en masse.

I know that people have been saying the end is nigh for f***ing millennia but you can't deny that we as a species know more about the world than ever before, and we can observe these changes, and we are tracking lock step with some of the worst predictions from 5, 10, 20 years ago. it's a mathematical fallacy to say that because it hasnt happened yet it's never going to.

All true and valid, I do agree that there's a big mathematical chance it will happen down the road, just don't see it incoming during our lifetime, as we both said - cockroaches.

I hope we will see reason and adapt and make the changes needed, but as you said - our hubris does not give a lot of hope for any distant future.

Nothing to do but hope and make those small changes we can make on a daily basis, us as "regular" people - reduce our consumption, recycle as much as possible, etc.

Having a small solar power source to charge devices, a go bag, a few weeks food/water on site, and plans on how/where to meet up with those you are close to in case of an emergency that causes communications to go out are attainable for all classes.

Community resiliency will likely be the greatest factor in determining your long-term survival IF s*** goes proper sideways.

This 100% solar community that endured Hurricane Ian with no loss of power and minimal damage is a great display of what a large community can come together to create.

Can you add this to op or adjust a post on page 1 for people who are interested? I don't see it happening anytime soon either, but regardless this is valuable information to some.
