    He can’t refuse the advances?

He could but advances really aren't a bad thing unless you blow it all and your album flops

  • safe

    yea its not wild
the big thing is that he doesnt own a lot of the masters and hes probably gotten almost nothing in terms of royalties because of advance recoupment
but its not some shocking exposal, this is what a lot of artists face

the difference is that Kanye is a megastar and he still cant get out of the deal

man you going hard asf in this thread respect

yeah tbh i see why a lot of people are speaking up about this, even if they don't agree with his way of going about things personally

    Ooo

So I’m curious did he just figure this out a few years ago back when he started ranting about being under contract forever? Or did he always know and just have it pent up for so long until his episode that it just came out? I’m not sure if you’re able to answer those just curious. And is that his obsession with being a billionaire to finally feel like he’s free?

im sure hes known for a while but I suspect he had some notion that he'd be able to get himself out of it either with money or otherwise

I think freedom is something he values absurdly high and I think him seeing drake have that freedom is probably part of why hes so desperate now to get out of it

Assuming the sample clearance + studio hours + personnel wages + software licenses + equipment + music videos + promotion + tour production are all added up in this?

    tour probably not
but everything else is either in the advance or counted as additional advance because theyre costs to the label

Paris recording sessions for example are listed at being $500k iirc

    also interesting:

the label still wants the Cruel Summer film
they list it in the 2016 GOOD contract as being a delivery obligation

    s*** we want it too

Yeah, also remember Zane Lowe interview he admitted he had to take a risky deal for the Yeezus tour? Something like if he didn’t make a certain amount of money he’d go into debt

    Label is ruthless

yea I think the tour wasn't related to the label though - if the label takes a cut of touring its a 360 and none of these documents reference touring in terms of a label investment
I dont know enough about how touring is structured but I suspect the reason it was risky is that it was his own investment rather than the label so if it didnt pan out it was his own money gone

    Thanks op.

Im not seeing anything shady here. Looks like a standard and fair contract

I think the thing thats shady is the fact that they were/have been able to extend it for so long

sure the label deserves pay off for taking a chance on someone like Kanye but for 7+ albums??

he did agree to it though

    CARMEN

    Personal question:

Do you think it’s in the vault, or likely not finished or even started?

    its entirely finished
he played it at a film festival on like 7 screens at once

but I think he never intended to release it publicly he always wanted it to be like an art exhibition thing where you had to watch to the way he wanted it to be seen

    its honestly not that much
theres a ton of stuff in there thats just incredibly bland specifications about what he can and cant do
im sure theres some interesting stuff I missed but the gist is that he has very little ownership

Did he really have to make 52 albums or

    He can’t refuse the advances?

im sure he can refuse/not use a lot of the stuff that goes direct to him
but the stuff like label costs for promotion, distribution and the like he wouldn't be able to refuse
I think hes said on twitter that basically they jack up those costs to prevent him from seeing money

Need Queen Taylor to reach out. Her battle likely played a part in Kanye going down this route.

Imagine Taylor and Kanye working together not as friends but as MUSICIANS and ARTISTS to fight for their masters. Fight for everyone’s.

    Legendary movement
