This is such a ridiculous and nonsensical way to live life.
The crazy thing is nobody is even saying you shouldn't own games digitally. If you wanna own nothing, rent forever, and engage with all of your art in the nonexistent cloud, then that's totally your decision.
The problem with Sony's move is they are cutting out physicals completely and not giving people the choice anymore.
Music went digital, but CDs, vinyl, and cassettes still exist.
Kindles and Nooks came out, but bookstores are still filled with physical books all over the globe.
Movies and shows get pushed straight-to-streaming nowadays, but still get released on Blu-Ray and 4K UHD.
Games existing digitally does not mean that they have to cease existing physically. That is a decision that is informed purely by corporate greed, late stage capitalism, and anti-consumer ideals.
This is not technology advancing like you keep trying to frame it as, this is a company cutting costs to maximize profit and control the market

would love to see them try to fit call of duty on a cassette tape
Sale somewhat yes but deep steam sale level no and variable pricing made people not trust them
“Deep steam sale level”
Yall are stuck in 2015. Steam sales havnt had steep flash sales in a decade. (I miss the f*** out of those timed 8 hour flash sales) the sales on psn constantly match Steam prices on sale
No they will not. When has a billion-dollar company ever made consumer-friendly moves after monopolizing the market?
Valve :) digital only

Part of the issue is limitations of the format though man . Capitalism an issue yes but so is the games not fitting on disc . Yes multiple disc work in some situations but games are getting such large worlds where you can’t easily slice up the content into multiple disc without breaking something. As well as fidelity of the games
Valve :) digital only
Yeah and they happen to be run by one of the few people in power who actually gives a f*** about the consumer, Sony is not
Man, even Stevie Wonder could see this coming.

I 100% get the hot consumer concerns and agree but the bigger picture is also acknowledging not all games can do multiple disc and run well . GTA vi im not shocked
What does this mean for sales? Do games ever really have to lower their price when there are no more used games? If you want to play it no matter how long it’s been out you have to buy it new so what’s the point of lowering the price
Prices for things will never go down if people continue to pay
Wolverine can do all that bullshit but cant let Miles Morales say Nigga
Peter be like “Uh, thanks fella.”
Thank you Sony
Yeah and they happen to be run by one of the few people in power who actually gives a f*** about the consumer, Sony is not
Their motto is power to the players
Also, the "plastic box" argument is complete nonsense @maxxing
Reread the press release, they specifically state that they're going to continue selling new games in retail stores, meaning they're gonna do the GTA VI thing where they sell you a plastic box with a digital download code inside of it
They better be looking at some tech that allows the transfer of physical to digital or something. Lot of people are only able to afford next gen systems by trading in their previous hardware, but by doing that you’d essentially be rendering your disc collection obsolete.
Also, another factor that I haven’t seen brought up.
No more Blu-Ray.
You’d have to have a dedicated player if you only own a PS6.

But why are we acting like all games are at the size and capacity of a GTA VI? The vast majority of games are not

shrimple economics bro the majority of gamers play like cod or FIFA that's it
If there’s no disc drive, how can you play Blu-Rays?

I don’t think 300gb Blu-ray Disc can be read in a console well if they ever exist . I am saying I don’t think what you’re asking for is realistic or believable . Then add in that people currently aren’t buying physical at the level to justify it . Also this large of a format would solely be used for games . Unless what someone wanted an entire series of tv shows or movies on one disc
I feel like it’s just not feasible . If Xbox was smart why would try to make it happen or something feasible . But I think gamers drifting from art styles to craving realism and 40-50 hour stories filled with details always eventually ends this way
I also think Sony using the metrics of what they dropped this generation as low demand for physical is unfair because they haven’t dropped must this generation where someone says I need that physical it’s revolutionary or my favorite vs refinement of what worked
Again gta vi would have record physical sales but not worth leaks and risk of jailbreak
If there’s no disc drive, how can you play Blu-Rays?
I mean there will probably be a disk drive attachment like the ps5 pro which isn’t sold with a disc drive
But why are we acting like all games are at the size and capacity of a GTA VI? The vast majority of games are not
PS6 all games will go up in size ….
Which is why ssd cost are tough
