putting my two cents in because most people don't seem to have the right take on this more or less. sony doing this absolutely does suck and im not gonna deny that, but ultimately it's a distraction from the fact that just because you have a game on a physical disc doesn't mean you had any ownership or control of it in any real way. you were still required to use it in a proprietary locked down console, often had to connect to the Internet, etc. then people be like "oh but PC doesn't have physical games" like i don't have terabytes of my games stored DRM free on my server and multiple PCs. who gives a f*** if it's stored on a disc that'll rot eventually? what really matters is whether you control the software or not, period. putting aside the novelty of having the box and the instruction booklet and all that, because yeah that's nice, but i can just look up scans of that s***. it's not worth sacrificing my digital freedom. hell i could put these games on a disc myself if i wanted, bc i actually "own" the games drm free. putting aside the fact that even back in the day when we were kids with the gamecube we were still buying licenses, and just because GOG sells you an offline installer doesn't mean it's also not a license.

what im trying to say is the concept of physical media is misunderstood as f*** in certain ways in these convos bc people conflate physical with true digital freedom, but these things don't inherently have anything to do with each other. so if you really hate this decision, sell your ps5 and get a PC and support storefronts like GOG and steam games that don't ship with DRM, itch.io, learn to pirate, etc.

I can’t believe this is what got everyone so upset

PlayStation 6 would only be an easy sell if it was fully backwards compatible with a disc drive for past generations . Even if no disc for future generations . If I could put ps1-5 disc in it and it worked I would buy one

We all know this ain’t happening. Full backward compatibility is basically the console version of folks still begging for micro SD to come back on smartphones

These digital-only niggas kill me man

As if the internet is something that everyone has access to and always works and will always be available 100% of the time

If you don't got internet, they should be worrying about bigger things than playing f***ing video games

It’s 2026, games get updates, day one and for years after

    Give me a break

Also even if you don’t have internet access 100% of the time, you’re good, you still have access to all your games? It’s not like your digital library uninstalls itself when the internet goes out?

Also if in this hypothetical scenario where internet is not available and discs are your only salvation, then you’re missing all the updates, bug fixes, extra content, dlc, expansions, etc. and you can’t play games with your friends online. that’s not that amazing of an experience at the end of the day

There are plenty of people out there who get enjoyment solely out of single-player games or games that don't require internet connection

You're not taking into account people who live in areas with terrible internet service as well

I lived where I had dogshit service, had to install games slowly all day but I still managed

Even just the single player games, they get day one patched, content added over the years, having just a disc in an internet-less situation is a very downgraded experience

Yeah, and someone should have the choice of having to put up with that or not, not have no other option to if they want to game

The update and patch rhetoric is massively overblown

niggas all on the cloud, sad!

There is no format that can hold the size of modern size games is one of the central issues. Then combine that with greed and wanting everyone to their marketplace eliminating used games sales

The fact that they weren’t finishing games for disc or if you just had disc there would be so many issues lowered the value of having the disc . Same as installing the disc taking as long as downloading the whole game / others can preload disc cannot

i love seeing these gamer tears

yeah lets cry about less plastic from cases, saving trees that would've been wasted on cover art, lowering emissions from shipping, and overall retail waste, while you're seeing record breaking heat temperatures across america

If you actually read the press release, they're still gonna be making those products, just without the discs inside

They're going to be selling plastic boxes with download codes inside

There is literally no one benefiting from this decision other than them
