Soundcloud era had good music Tiktok era has bad music

  • Aug 12, 2022

Well the Soundcloud era had XXXtentacion who is imo one of the most talented young artists to hit the mainstream in a long time. So that era wins by default for me.

Yes but that's not really OPs point

We are talking about popularity and relevancy not music quality

I dont really care for either

Mainstream music as a whole is probably gonna Peter out in the next 20 years as cultural institutions collapse from market forces and instability as a whole caused by climate change and politics in the west

    Give me my good music

there's a few I could think of tbh

Jack Harlow, 24KGoldn,Slump6s, BKTheRula NLE Choppa, Babysantana, SoFaygo, Kentheman, Megan Thee Stallion, ssgkobe, Kaash Paige (not rly a rapper but still)
but the fact that lots of them are making progress in the industry based on their music and not the spectacle of them being d*** addicts or wannabe shooters or domestic abusers (lots of love for XXX and his music but lets be real), make this era miles better than the sc days because their careers will have Longevity. majority of the sc rappers fell off before their 2nd album.

besides Jack none of those artists you listed will be relevant in 2 years and most of them have fallen off already.

I think the current gen rn suffers from a high floor-low ceiling. The music quality overall is much better, especially production, but none of the new artists have that wow factor that guys like Yachty, Uzi, or X had for example that really drew you into the music. A part of that too is that their style has been studied and emulated a million times rn. There is no internet gimmick you could use to promote your music that hasn't been seen already. Now that I think about it, fatigue is probably a big issue. Maybe the underground needs a sharp turn. No more 808s and autotune idk something radical

i think they're still working on their sound. i don't even think they're aware of that. some of it still sounds way too euro to hit the hip hop mainstream. but they've shown too much promise at this point for me to believe they'll fail.

    Soundcloud is still popping

Carti is the innovator...whatever he does next will set the tone

Read back those names you listed and tell me why you’re surprised

  • Aug 12, 2022

The SoundCloud wave still had a lot of rap influence and were rappers. The best of them still had a little emcee left in them.

The tik tok era is more alternate music none of them have commanding presence on the mic that grabs you. It’s like they hide behind the beats. None of the guys I have heard have vocal presence that make me feel like I need to hear what they say or what they about.

  • i cannot see the connection when people say that are just copying carti/wlr other than the opium members
