Dude, I'm not saying it isn't a massive opportunity. It's a new medium so there's tons of money to be made. I get why they are investing in it. I'm just saying this sucks for independent artists who want the same things but continue to struggle.

Spotify has also overpaid for podcasts that aren't delivering. In reality this is a long-term play for them.

Well that reply is towards your "no way podcasts are this pofitable" comment lol. I wasnt arguing fairness. Just profitability.

About to start a KTT podcast. There's no way Bandito should be giving you these threads for free.

    Podcast coming soon.

Well, my statement still stands. Currently, the music industry is more profitable than the podcasting industry.

One day, podcasting could potentially overtake it. However, I think this is unlikely.

    That's the issue.

Its because of sponsorships & events such as cons & meet ups etc.

Stuff that indie acts even major dont have access too.

Podcast revenue is more similar to moives/tv.

    Ads, events & fan funding.

Most artists dont have ads or fan funding, & those are also looked down upon in music, & they dont have as much variety in events.

Podcasting just has different (and more firendly/acessible) money streams.

Agreed. It's still a new industry so the potential is there for sure. However, it's not there currently as most pods are still owned by individuals and not massive studios/ platforms etc. Deals are harder to get as an individual.

There is more money in a new podcast than a new artist (ofc with respectable audiences numbers).

Of course music as a whole atm is more profittable when you have legacy acts & people like drake aka the biggest artist in history statistically accounting for it.

    And they already have that.

I say a new podcast has a faster path to revenue. They still have to cultivate a fan base that brings the deals. However, it's hard to cultivate something without a following. That's why we see platforms targeting celebrities and public figures. However, those people often are not good/natural at poding.

Although a new artist can tour pretty much right away. It won't be lots of money but they have the ability to break even.

Pretty sure Spotify is not making off of podcasts yet. I dialed into the last earnings call and they are spending a s*** ton on acquisitions.

Well yeah cuz they dont have much yet, but its better to invest into podcasting or new podcasts than music or new music atm.

Like you said, theyre getting a s***ton of acquisitions. Theyre setting the base so it can add to them.

Basically, atm, streaming has hit the ceiling for music, while podcast has just got the building built.

Not only are they making money off of their pod streams, but im sure their deal will also account for ad cuts along with events n merch etc.

Since they are an individual instead of a a label, they have more options to more potential profitshares (all of course it depends on the agreed contract at the end of the day, but the potential being there alone is still great for them). They are the label for the pods.

The biggest artists atm are making more money than the biggest pods, but the smaller artists are not making more money than the smaller pods. Its just plugging holes in their (the streaming company) pockets & rounding out the lower end imo, with the potential of the pods bigger end becoming gigantic. Its a win win scenario for them, since they still have access to the world's biggest music.

Streaming is the worst thing to have happened for the indie & newcomers scene imo. A statement ive been saying for years on here now.

Streaming is for the biggest and major artists & profits. Streaming is for whatever makes them the most profits.

Yes and no. I don't think streaming has hit it's ceiling. It's is the new standard until something else is new and people will always listen and consume music so there's a lot of room to grow. Looking at paid subscriptions across all platforms there a lot of room to grow still. This means that the majority of people around the world still do not stream music which is a massive problem when you consider what streaming accounts for in terms of revenue.

I also think every era it was difficult for an indie artist. Everyone can upload there music to a streaming platform. Not everyone could make CDs and get placements in best buys and HMV without major label backing.

With the advent of social media (IG, Tiktock) and streaming, it's the easiest time for an indie artist to get on. As they can control their fate more than ever.

Yes, like 5 podcasts. The music industry brought in 17 billion last year. Podcasts have not brought in that much. It's still a new medium with a select few making money at the top.

numbers look different due to general publishing and revenue share off units sold but a lot of podcasts make money outside off direct listening. majority of money made is off sponsorships. I would compare it to YouTube in that sense.

YouTube ad-sense is pretty trash but the sponsorship deals bring in the bulk of money to the creator.

also in terms of listeners podcasts are growing exponentially, dsp's know what's going on, that's why there is a huge focus on that market.
